Need help identifying this object

I have a 2002 Taurus with the 3.0L OHV engine. I have been having some trouble with the car since I purchased it. It started with misses at highway speeds and even had a pending code for misfire on cylinder 3. I replaced the plugs, wires and the cracked iginition coil so the misfire problem is now gone.

I am still having issues with lack of power at times and something that feels similar to a miss at highway speeds. The check engine light came on showing a code P1151. I took the vehicle to the dealership and let them check it. They said the upstream O2 sensor on bank 2 needed replacement. I replaced it. The car immediately drove better. The next day, all the same problems started again.

I believe my problem is fuel related and here's why. I connected my fuel pressure test guage to the test port and it showed 32 psi at idle. I purchased an Actron CP9180 scan tool and monitored some of the PCM PIDs at idle and it showed the fuel pressure at around 260-280kpa. My FSM gives two different fuel pressure specs for engine running: 50-56psi (350-380kpa) and 35-58psi (240-400kpa). I have replaced the fuel filter with no change in pressure. My question to you is what is the object shown in the photo. This is a picture of my fuel supply line with a silver round object connected inline. there are no wires or vacuum lines going to the object so my best guess is an inline fuel filter. The dealership could not identify this object and the only place it would even show up on their drawing was for a flex-fuel vehicle, which mine is not. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hmmm, so there's only a fuel line going in to one side and a line coming out, no vacuum, no electrical? I wonder if that's some sort of combination pulse dampner/anti-backflow valve? What was it called on the flex fuel vehicle? It doesn't look like a filter, but does have a shape characteristic of a valve with diaphragm cavity.

Have you tried getting the Ford part number off of it and searching for it online or through the dealer?

Yeah, the guy at the dealership tried to get a part number off of it but there wasn't a standard Ford part number. The object wasn't identified in their drawings but he called the line my fuel return line, which I know is not correct. I have the Electronic Ruturnless Fuel System on this car. There is no pressure regulator or fuel return line as I have a fuel rail pressure switch on the fuel rail (visible in the photo).

I just got through monitoring the PID's on my car again and I recorded the data. One thing really jumps out at me. According to the reference values listed in the 2002 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis manual, my engine load should be 10-20% at hot idle yet the actual value was constantly around 38%. I did not have the radio on or the heater blower. Also, the spark advance according the reference values should have been 24-30Deg. yet mine hovered around 18-21Deg., once dropping as low as 14Deg. Fuel presssure remained in the 267-282 kpa range.

Should I be concerned about the load or is that expected for an engine with 140,000 miles on it?

I'm not sure how engine load is calculated by the PCM, so I'm not sure how much to concern yourself with those numbers. If I interpretted your initial post correctly, your misfire-like symptoms occur at highway speeds, you don't really have a concern with idle, correct? If so, you should be taking your readings in the same conditions where you have issues.

What are your short and long term fuel trim numbers? If your fuel pressure really is low, you'll probably see that in the STFT and LTFT numbers. I'd also expect you'd have a code pointing to a lean condition. Do your sensor 1 oxygen sensor voltages switch properly?

That's a lot to read through. Your 6 Feb data for the fuel trim numbers seems rather high for the long term side. It also appears pretty erratic. However, the fuel trim numbers of today's data seem pretty reasonable and consistent. The last few frames though appear to be corrupted and should be thrown out.

Myabe instead of posting all the data, you could plot the fuel trim numbers from the data posted on the 6th and a separate plot for the data on the 10th to see how they compare. While none of the fuel trim numbers (I only scanned the data, didn't study it all) appeared outside of acceptable parameters, the highway data from today seems to be higher than typical.

The data from the last drive cycle was corrupted as well. I'm not sure what could be causing that.

I've noticed that the long term fuel trim numbers are consistently higher for bank 2 than they are for bank 1. I wonder if replacing the upstream O2 sensor for bank 1 would help any. It would be nice if I knew how load was calculated by the PCM. I reset the check engine light (code P1151) and it has not come back on even though I continue to experience drivability concerns.

I just looked at a Ford OBD-II description document for 1998. There are a lot of references to engine load and the various ranges for the load in order for certain OBD-II monitors to be used, but nothing that explains how that engine load is calculated.

You might try a Google search (I have not).
