1996 1.9L Trans Leak.

Hey All,

I am here again for help. My trans just started gushing fluid right where it connects to the engine. I wiped it and looked at the location of the leak, it appears to be coming directly out of the converter area across from the inspection plate. I didn't see any leakage from the driveshaft axles and the vent seems to be clear. I searched in this forum and someone had the exact problem but no replys.........and it was from 2004.

Any ideas before I pull it out. The tranny that is.

PS I have 150000 miles and just replaced the head. It purrs like new.

I dont have any idea, except to have a look - the hard way. Hopefully someone with better info will respond.

I didn't put fluid in it until i saw the massive leak.

Anyway, i pulled the tranny today. What a pain in the ass, I couldn't get the axles out so i took the tranny end apart. The drivers side was in the way when i dropped the trans, but i got it out. 6 hours of work for a seal thats about 3 inches in diameter.
My question for anyone:

When I got the tranny out the torque converter was still on the flywheel, should i put in back in the tranny before i put it back or back onto the flywheel??

You got the tranny out with the engine in place? Wow - you are beyond needing most advice from me!
The 2 reasons I had for separating torque converters from the flywheel:
1. When pulling the engine, you would first unbolt the TQ, then you only needed a couple of inches to separate engine and bellhousing before you could lift the engine straight up. . ...since the flywheel (or flex plate) only sticks out less than 2 inches.
2. When putting the engine back into the car with the tranny already installed, I could carefully & gently work the TQ back onto the tranny input shaft and get the TQ fully seated into the input seal; without damaging any little splines, causing any burrs, or damaging the input seal.

Yea it was a bear to get out , i pulled it underneath because all i have is a couple of jacks and concrete blocks. I am sore as hell today.

I am going to put the TQ back on the flywheel first before attaching the tranny. The whole reason for pulling the tranny was for that seal, i just want it to make good contact so it won't leak.

Pull the tranny for a 12.00 dollar seal and end up with a shopping list for advanced auto parts. Two new motor/tranny mounts, three seals various items to clean the dirt.

i read your other post, I too have to work in the dirt!! i got a good laugh .
