2005 Equinox Dead! Until jumped then fine
Weird thing yesterday with my sisters 05 Equinox. We were at a family event and went to leave. Put the key in the ignition and nothing. The car was dead. No lights, no click of the starter, nothing. The CD changer could be heard trying to change discs though. We had to leave it at one location for a while and manually locked the side doors. When we tried to get back in the car we could not get the door unlocked with the key! WTF? Just so we're clear...The door would not unlock with the KEY. You could not turn it in either direction. We managed to get in through an unlocked lift gate.
When we came back a second time we pressed a button on the remote and the stereo let out this low rumble. Sound like some super low frequency blaring for about 2 seconds. Then we jumped it. This time when we turned the key in the ignition, the gauges all lit up and the car started instantly!!! No slow cranking like the battery was dead or even low. I would tell you that we could have removed the jumper cables and started the car without them at that point. We drove it no more than 5 minutes and were able to shut it off and restart it with no problems. We did this several times over the next hour. It has been fine ever since then. What happened?

Sounds like a battery cable not making a proper connection. When you jumped it, it worked . You probably moved one of the cables enough to make enough of a connection to work. The first thing I would do is make sure all connections are tight. - Jon

Re: 2005 Equinox Dead! Until jumped then fine
I thought so as well. We checked them later that day and they were all tight and clean. Every single connection looked like brand new. Of course I was surprised at how tiny the battery and the cables were. I would swear they were not much bigger than a CAT5/network cable!
Anyone else? It's got me stumped that's for sure. She took it to a local shop and they tested the alternator and the battery. Both checked out good. A bad battery connect sounds plausible. But it does not explain the CD player still trying to work and it definitely does not explain the door not being able to unlock with the key.

Re: 2005 Equinox Dead! Until jumped then fine
Our 05 AWD had have problems starting on 3 different occasions this winter. All after the normal starts in cold mornings and we had to restart the car after short trips. The starter didn't have enough power to start the engine.
Usually a few tries and the car would start without problem... I think we have a weak battery and will put a new one in soon. |
