98 Grand am GT Motor Tick?/Knock?
I have owned this car for 2 years and has had this tick/knock that i am wondering what it could be. Thinking it is lower end and wondering if it could be rod and main bearings that are worn. Can the oil pan be pulled and bearings changed??? Need to make car last 1 more year. Can anyone help??

Re: 98 Grand am GT Motor Tick?/Knock?
you can easily check with the oil pan off to see if it is a problem with main bearings , etc. to eliminate that possibility. Just have someone turn the crankshaft back and forth and check whats causing the noise. You might be able to fix the problem with the engine in the car but depending on what it is you might have to pull the engine...good luck

Re: 98 Grand am GT Motor Tick?/Knock?
Welcome to AF Jeepin Justin !!
Is this a 4 cylinder ? If so, then it could be your timing chain or tensioner bad. This is a noisey engine anyway. How many miles ? A main bearing going out usualy sounds like a hammer hitting the lower block. A rod knock is not as loud but knocks steady at a constant rpm, say while driving down the road at 55mph.

Re: 98 Grand am GT Motor Tick?/Knock?
3100 and 3400 almost always have a top end ticking sound from the lifters if it has 60,000 or more miles on it. Probably nothing to worry about unless it actually is a knock.

Re: 98 Grand am GT Motor Tick?/Knock?
Lots of the 3.1L have a piston slap noise when there cold (sounds like a rod bearing gone ) its because they have long pistons skirts and it slaps around when the stoke is at the bottom
