Colbalt's actual MPG-What will it get
Thinking of buying a Colbalt with the 2.2L engine with automatic transmission. Commute is 85 miles per day and 95% is interstate miles. What kind of gas milage will the Cobalt get? Thanks!

Re: Colbalt's actual MPG-What will it get
You'll get around 30 mpg.
I suggest going to a bookstore and picking up the 2007 Consumer Reports about cars, interesting info about the Cobalt |

Re: Colbalt's actual MPG-What will it get
My 2007 is brand spanking new. I've only got 120mi on it, but IMO, 35mpg is pushing it for the 2.2 and 4T45E auto combo. 5spd manual yes, definately ~35mph hywy. You might get low 30's with the auto at easy, steady hywy speeds. That said, drive one. I can't get enough of mine! Having driven nothing but trucks/suv's/4x4's since 1992, my Cobalt is an absolute blast. Very tight, responsive, cool sound to that Ecotec 2.2L. Sad thing is, the fit/finish of this $12K car beats the heck out of the $25K trailblazer it replaced!

Re: Colbalt's actual MPG-What will it get
Jayson, I take it back bud. I'm at about 1200mi now & have been averaging ~33mpg per tank. My dash/DIC consistantly shows 34-36 for my hywy trips to/from work, but I'm not quite seeing that over a full tank. Still though, low thirties isn't too shabby.

Re: Colbalt's actual MPG-What will it get
I have a 5sp. I drove from OH to NC and I got 38.5 on the freeway but that was 500+ miles and all freeway. I drive mostly in town and average mid to high 20's and I drive fairly hard.

Re: Colbalt's actual MPG-What will it get
Hi All,
I have a 2006 Cobalt LS with the 2.2 EOtech and Auto. Trans and I get 37 mpg on the freeway at 70mph with the AC running. The only thing I did to help with the mileage was to replace the air filter with one from K&N. I also run Castrol Syntec synthetic motor oil which has a better drag coefficient. Current mileage is around 18,000 and I am still getting these numbers. |

Re: Colbalt's actual MPG-What will it get
I have a 2006 LS 2.2l Slushbox. I average 33-34mpg daily driving, with about a 40/60 city/highway ratio. However, on a trip to the in-laws that took the car over 2,200 miles, I averaged 47.8mpg on 99% highway. I put about 50 miles on it in town.
Only thing I have done is a K&N Filter Element. I drive conservatively, because I'm a cheap bastich and don't like paying that $30-35 a fill up all too often. I usually get two to two and a half weeks out of a tank if I stretch it.

Re: Colbalt's actual MPG-What will it get
I just bought a 2007 Cobalt LS last week and on the first tank of gas I averaged 41.8 mpg according to the car. (It took 8.6 gallons of gas to fill it and it has 360 miles on it, so that agrees.) About 250 of those miles were on the interstate at about 65-70 mph.
It's all in the way you drive. If you really want to conserve gas, the best thing to do on the interstate is maintain constant speed close to 65 mph, try to keep behind another vehicle. The Cobalt seems to get about 30-32 mpg driving at 75 with no one in front. It's about 35 with another car 100 feet in front of you. Driving with someone in front of you at 50 mph, the car can exceed 50 mpg. Coasting in neutral whenever possible is a good tip too (with a manual -- this is bad for an automatic transmission). Just remember to rev the engine appropriately so when you put it back in gear the clutch doesn't get worn down. PS I love my new Cobalt. It's got the 2.2L engine. The 2.4L will get a little less fuel economy. You also lose some fuel economy going to an auto. |

Re: Colbalt's actual MPG-What will it get
Have an 07 Lt 1 2.2 W/Auto & cruise with about 2,900 miles logged to date.
At 200 miles, I made a 2,700 mile trip of which 90% was Interstate. Held the speed limit +2-5 MPH for the most part and didn't use the cruise until almost 900 miles were logged. Overall my trip averaged 35.26 MPG. Speedo and odomoter accuracy are within 1%. Tire pressures were 38 front 32 rear before leaving on this trip. FWIW did a fast first oil change with 5W-30 Pennzoil Platinum at 1,500 miles & installed a magnetic drain plug. Since I'm an Amsoil dealer I'll do the next change with Amsoil 5W-30 ASL.
