2000 Kia Sportage WILL NOT start when it is cold outside..HELP!!!

I have a 2000 Kia Sportage that will not start in cold weather. For example, my boyfriend tried to start it this morning and it wouldn't turn over. He had to hold the gas pedal down for it to start and to keep it started he had to conitnue to hold the gas pedal down and even then when he tried to drive it it died...it was 10 degrees outside, we had this problem a few days ago but once it warmed up outside it started fine. Any suggestions???
