Re: B1
It doesn't sound like your problem is the pump but something else. Could it be leaking from the timing cover instead? Can you tell where exactly on the pump it is leaking? Is it where it mates to the timing cover? If you can send or link us to a digital picture of the leak at its origin, that would be very helpful. Did you see anything unusual at the mating surface of the cover? Could the cover be cracked at one of the bolt holes? Does it have any deep scratches from cleaning off the old gasket? Did you use sealant on both sides of the gasket and around the bolt holes?

Re: B1
My 97 was losing small amounts of coolant last spring, but no evidence on the ground. Finally spotted a couple of times right below the water pump. Was 100% sure it was the water pump. Didn't feel I was mechanically adept at repairing because of having to raising the whole engine a few inches to replace. Took it to my mechanic---turned out to be the pump seal behind the water pump (is this the timing cover?). Suggested replacing the water pump also, but mechanic said no need, it was in perfect shape. You must have the patience of Job, to go through this 4 times. My frustration after attempting it once would have driven me crazy. P.S.--still using a small amount of coolant, but don't think I've ever owned a Ford that didn't.
