Question battery light on dash

battery light on my dash stays on now. i replaced the battery and the light still stays on, i was told that my alternator is out or is going out and i was wondering if there is a way to check to see if the alternator is out with out taking it of the car since its so hard to get to. its a 1999 mercury mystique LS v6 2.5 engine. hopeing there is a way to check before i have to take the alternator off...
