Crankshaft Position Sensor Variation Learning Procedure

I have a 3.8 LTZ that died and will not start. I have replaced crank sensor, coils and ignition control module. In Haynes I read about this procedure. Does anyone know ho to do this? It's got fuel pressure. Around 45 with the key on and has spark but seems mistimed. I think I have wasted a lot of money based on what the shop told me and it still doesn't run. Had I let them replace the coils and ignition module it still wouldn't have been running.

I am almost to think it has slipped a tooth or two on the timing chain. Unfortunately, I am not savvy enough to figure that out or not. I used to be able to look at the timing mark and distributor and figure it out.

My scanner gives no codes.

That procedure is not required on this engine. Now, lets see where we are. What was the original problem?

That's good to know. After further reading in the manual, I don't have a scanner thaT allows me to do it anyway.

Problem is, it was running great, then started losing power, sputtered and blew a large puff of black smoke from, tailpipe and stopped and would not start. I wasn't driving, my wife was. From her description, it seems as a n ignition/timing problem. Not having time, I took it to the shop and they told me all three coil packs were dead and the ignition module.

I asked it be towed home and I replaced those because I wasn't going to spend $800 on the car. It still failed to start and I replaced the crankshaft sensor. Still no luck.

Pressure seems good at rails. Spraying carb cleaner failed to start. I still need to do what I should have done initially and check for spark. I need the wife to help me with that as my arms aren't long enough and no remote starter. I also check firing order to ensure I replaced wires properly. I also marked before removal.

Let me see if I have spark. It does appear to be a timing issue as it does blow back through the intake. I need to start with basic trouble shooting at this point.

I just don't know on the newer cars how to see if timing chain has slipped or this is something else.

I am glad I didn't pay the shop $800 to fix it and it still not be what they said. Those packs and module are nothing to replace.

It's a challenge. Luckily its not may main means of transportation but I do want to get it running. Its cheaper to run around town than my Avalanche.

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor Variation Learning Procedure

I would hope after they put the parts in and it did not run they would take them out and not chrage you, illegal to to this sort of thing in NYS. Anyway, did you check the condition of the balancer and sensor ring when it was off? If this is good, yes it sounds like an internal issue. Hi mileage car? Again this assumes the firing order is correct.

Sorry if I mislead. They charged me for the tow and the diagnostic. I bought parts and put them in. Their diagnosis was incorrect.

Firing order is correct. I just checked that.. About 130K.. Never abused either.

Ba lancer looked good. No dirt, grease, oil, fastener points are intact. I sprayede off with brake clearer and put it back on.

Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor Variation Learning Procedure

Get a socket on the balancer bolt see if there feels like excessive play when turning the engine in opposite directions, this indicates a t'chain issue. Usually this is not an issue with these engines though.
