88 Mustang Horn (my last problem!)

Hey this is my last question i promise! On my 88 mustang lx the horn never worked since i got it.. i figured the horn was just dead but i then noticed there was no fuse for it! so i bought the appropriate fuse and put it in. well as i put it in sparks began to fly and the horn honked !! so the horn does work, but naturallly once i put the fuse in sparks flew all over the place and the fuse was busted... any ideas as to what could cause this? Or any ways to fix it? I had everything off in the car, and the keys were not in the ignition, so it was not bad installing of the fuse.

Sounds like you have a bad connection somewhere. I know that the cig lighter is on the same circuit as the horn. Try disconnecting your lighter, and putting a new fuse in. If that doesnt wrok, you most likely have a bad horn blow, which should be easy to find at any Ford dealer, or at one of the many websites. My horn blow went bad too, but instead of fixing it, I just decided to clip the wires going to it, and now I live without a horn. Kind of needy when you get stuck behind bad drivers and the road rage kicks in....

yo cruise control is on that same circuit too. what happened to me was the back of the fuse box separated from the front half making all my fuses have poor connections, but for some reason it only affected that circuit. try to mash it together and then check your grounds. maybe make sure that your horn isn't stuck on by checking our your steering wheel.

Your absolutly right... I knew there was one other things, besides my phone charger that stopped working when that fuse blows, but couldnt remember.... Most likely, the problem is the horn blow on the steering wheel... Turns out, it is 2 pieces of copper, seperated by a thin piece of foam. When you push the center of the wheel to toot your horn, you make those copper pieces come into contact with each other, closing the circuit for the horn.... Most likely, those copper pieces are in constant contact, creating an overdraw on your circuit, blowing your fuse..... I will always own a Ford, and I will always, always, wonder what kind of shit those engineers were smoking in the late 80's

I dont know how old this is .. [if you still need help] but if your horn is beeping while you are not pressing on the steering wheel then the foam inside of the steering wheel is thin.. just open it up and use any foam that sticks to space it out.. just make sure that the bumps in the copper arent covered.. you could use the stripping from doors.. if you leave the foam too thick itll be dificult to force the copper to touch.. if its too thin itll be sensitive.. cut it down little by little till your comfotable..
