Hey guys. I'm a single Mom and starting yesterday about 20 minutes after I got out of my van, I went to get back into it to run to the store and the key would not turn. Nothing. The steering wheel is not not locked it just won't turn. I tried the other two keys I have and get the same thing. I cannot get it to my mechanic to fix so I am forced to fix it on my own. Can someone please tell me what to do? I am sure it's the ignition barrel but I've never changed one before.

Re: key won't turn in ignition.
You didn't say what year and model.
You said you wanted someone to tell you what to do, call a locksmith. |

Re: key won't turn in ignition.
If you have keyless entry, the key won't work unless you activate the keyless "unlock". You might also try having a "code key" cut by a local locksmith. The key maybe so worn that it won't active the tumblers in the ignition lock.

Re: key won't turn in ignition.
Our cars seem to be prone to the ignition key lock cylinder failing (I have had this issue with my '96 Caravan and '98 neon). I had to replace the lock cylinder and it was a pain to remove, as I had to remove the trim around the steering column and then using a rubber mallet tap on the lock cylinder while trying to turn the key to on. Once the key moves to on, you can look on the under side of the lock cylinder and see a small piece of metal or plastic protruding, push this in with a small screw driver while pulling on the lock cylinder and it will all slide out, then replace the cylinder and re-key

I just replaced mine on my 99 Caravan with 103,000 miles. It was really seized up. WD40 didn't help but tapping on it with a hammer got it turn enough to take it out. This is one expensive piece. I should have called first. I would have gone to a junk yard and put in a used one. I couldn't find anything online at NAPA or Autozone so I went to the dealer and the part was $156 with them rekeying and using the old keys. The whole van's not worth $156
The replacement was relatively easy with the help I got from this forum. Just trying to line up the screw holes on the trim, was a bitch. That took longer than the actual replacement.
