2000 rodeo 3500 rpms at 75 mph..what do i need to do

my 2000 rodeo 2.2. 5 speed has it share of problems...
it is reving up to 3500 rpm's at 75 mph some people say i need a clutch some say it's the timing..
any help would be greatly apprciated....

Well, if it was a 3.2L V6 with the automatic that would be normal.

Mine rides at 3200 rpm at 75mph all the time - has since bought new.

Wanted to add though, I believe the timing belt on the 2.2L 4-cylinder is due EVERY 40k or 60k, can't remember which it is for sure, look at your owners manual, but do NOT go over the recommended interval for the timing belt. These belts, if they break, will due SEVERE damage to the engine.

I would put my many on the clutch.
Is it slipping going up hill? How many miles on the truck?
Mine 99' V6 DOHC automatic,rides at some 2700rpm at 75 mph.

Isn't 3500 RPM about normal for an engine that small pushing a large vehicle 75mph? Probably any slower and you would fry it up....

Has that rpm changed? If so, if it is a manual clutch it's probably slipping... High gear is the greatest load on a clutch....

I had a 1985 Trooper (first year in US) 1.9 litre, it was at 4000 rpm going 65 mph.... Engine was so small with a large water jacket... In the winter at idle the temperature guage would go down... Had to wear gloves and a hat because it was so cold in the large cabin...

not sure if it is slipping ...it slows down alot going up hill though..\
it's got 90,000 miles ...i bought it with 57,000

i think it was at 3000 rpm going 70mph ....it has incresed some...3200 rpm going 70mph

aren't there a lot of different factors that may push the rpm's up? outside temp, engine temp, tire size, in vehicle load, etc...

do you have any trans or cel codes being thrown at you?

this is true...there could be alot of diffrent factors..

the check engine light comes and goes...seems to go off when i get under 1/2 tank of gas...

Is this an automatic? If so, it surely is downshifting from high gear when you go up a hill, causing the engine to speed up. (faster engine speed, more horsepower) And yes, tire pressure, vehicle load, etc may make the transmission downshift sooner. Tire size, yes, but have you changed them lately? Normal wear on your tread will be negligble for your measurements.

If you are on a level with an automatic it should put you in high gear and your rpms should not fluctuate greatly. Most new transmissions actually "Lock In" on high gear to avoid any slippage from the fluid clutch... Not sure on the Rodeo, but I would suspect that the 2000 has this....

If it is a stick, then if you are in high gear there should be no fluctuation between your RPM/MPH measurements... A hypothetical example: a measurement for a vehicle at 3000 rpm shows 70 mph whether going up a hill or not. (unless your clutch is slipping)

I deleted previous post - my error, was relating to an automatic, forgot that you mentioned having owned a stick shift.

Yes, your clutch is slipping - need a new clutch from the sounds of it.

I tell you what you can do, you can get you a gallon a gas pour on the engine. Then get you a match and burn it.

i guess i could have done that ..thought about pushing it in the Neuse River(Johnston Co. N.C). But my wife would not let me ....ended up trading for a little compact car ......every thing is better ..no clutch issues..and no more rodeo ...which i did enjoy when it ran ...

Matt,

This would be due to your fuel sending unit. Not too hard of a fix - requires you to drop the fuel tank to remove the pump unit and replace the sending unit on that assembly.
