Will a bad Oil Press sending unit cause truck to stop?

I have a 98 c1500 with a 5.7. On a recent trip out of town I noticed that the Oil Pressure was up to about 60#'s and freaked out. After watching it for awhile it bounced around a bit then went back down to the normal 45#. After awhile a again it bounced back up then back down. I kind of figure that this is the sign of the sending unit going bad, but if it actually decides it wants to go to 0#'s will it cutoff the fuel pump?

By the way the oil level is fine with about 500 miles on the oil.

Thanks

No it will not, get a mechanical test gage on it to make sure there is no internal problem if ok, replace the sender.

Done. Is there another "test Port" for a mechanical guage ordo I need to put it where the original is. Thanks.
