91 civic std 3dr. Quit running at highway speed. Initial diagnosis showed weak and erratic spark. Towed home. Removed cap found rotor MELTED and spun. Have not yet pulled distributor and handspun. Is this an indicator of: ignitor failing? coil failing? Distributor failing?
If "distributor failure" has anyone tried rebushing? It used to be sop in Subarus. Thanks for any insites. |

Never mind. Distributor is junk. Can any one beat $165.00 + ship?

That price seems reasonable...I paid $140 for a used '85 dizzy for my old 626 before core exchange..

I would say try a junkyard, but you never know what your going to get from them....thats another option though...

I had some rotor problems for about a month. The little screw that holds the rotor in place kept coming out. It would stay in there for a week, but when I really revved it up to make it up a big hill (La Bajada), around 5 grand, that screw would come out, car would backfire a couple times, and then I'd be on the roadside with my little screwdriver...usually wearing a suit.
After a month of that, the distributor gave one good wheeze and stalled in traffic. I got it going one more time after laying on of hands, and it made it almost to my parking spot before dying (the car, not me), not to be resurrected. I bought a used dizzy on ebay BUY IT NOW! for $59. I installed it, and it still didn't start, but after swapping out my old coil for the one that came with the 'new' dizzy, it fired up. So, I state: untreated rotor problems can kill your distributor. Distributors on ebay can be cheap, but you can't bet your life on them. Distributors were not available in any junkyard within 300 miles of me. Autozone price for a rebuilt D15 distributor was $300. AND they'd have to order it. New distributor was over $400. Dealer price was $600. Am I happy with my $59 distributor from ebay, with my own $43 coil? You bet! Flunky PS-If your distributor has strictly mechanical problems, like bushings, clunkings, grindings, etc, some shops can rebuild them, and they can do it cheap! |
