2000 Accord Timing Belt nightmare

Just wanted to share this horror story of my 2000 Accord 4cyl.

Last month I had my timing belt changed at a shop near by my morning job. They gave me pretty good deal. It was only $300 to install the following parts: two timing belts, all drive belts, water pump, all seals and gasket, and the tensionners. I provided all the OE parts to the shop.

The shop did it really fast (within three hours.) I went to pick up the car and drove home, it was fine and I was happy. Next day came while I was driving on the freeway, I started to smell burning oil coming inside the cockpit but there isn't any smoke visible anywhere. I lifted the car up and found traces of oil on near the crank, leaking down onto the sub frame.

I took the car back to the shop and the mechanic told me that it was the oil pump. I didn't believe them at first but they kept convincing me that it was the oil pump. So I dropped another $400 to have the oil pump installed. Drove it home and again next day, I can still smell the burning oil even after I clean all the oil out.

At this point I was mad... I traced the oil and found that the cause of the oil leak was from faulty valve cover gasket. I don't know if the mechanic did a bad job sealing the shaft or the gasket was bad... I spent $400 for nothing...

Now I noticed that the new oil pump is making whining sound (little bit like a supercharged sound but not as loud.) Is that something I should be worry about in the future? Also my car consumes 1 quart of oil per 2 weeks lol insane... But I have all the new replacement parts coming and the mechanic offers to install it for free.

Man... all the money I spent, I should have brought it to the Honda dealer but the reason I didn't was because the dealer messed up my 05 Accord. I was getting an odd CEL on that car and they told me to swap out the ECU... cost me $800 and didn't fix the problem...

It's so hard to find good trusty mechanics now a day..

Re: 2000 Accord Timing Belt nightmare

I am so sorry to hear this.

Unfortunately you are not the firtst one...

Dishonest dealers/mechanics did it to me too. This was one of the main reasons I started doing my own repairs. Learned from my own mistakes. Paid for them dearly...
