WIP: Jordan 191

Next build is the Jordan 191.This will be my Torcan Contest entry for 2009, junior category. This will be my first contestJ.

This is the real car:



I purchased photo etch and jordan 191 paint from zero paints, wanted to try photo etch out.

This should be a very fun build.

I will post as as soon as i can. First i have to get exams out of the way first, they start tuesday so i should start building it next weekend, so ill post progress pics in about a week and a half, i just wanted to start the wip thread now. Plus im still waiting for all the stuff i purchased for the kit to come in.

I made some stands for my rear cowling. I think it looks alright. This is the first thing i ever scratch built.

What do you guys think?

Hey Zubski,

Nice job on the stands!! I am also working on this kit. I am doing the Australian GP car with the help of the Studio27 decal sheet and photo etch. Just as a head's up: If you use this S27 decal sheet be aware that the light green is considerably brighter than the Tamiya decals. The Zero paint light green matches the Tamiya decal colours much better. Also the shape of the top side cowlings is different between the two decal sets. There are also some significant differences with the front wing so check your references before you commit to a particular GP. Put it this way: I hope you can learn from my mistakes! Keep up the good work!

I have been working on the model a bit.

First of all, YES! my PE came in.
Quick question, what type of glue do you guys use for PE?



Glued and puttied the monocque together. This is what i plan on doin to it.

I tryed something new. When i was sanding down the putty i used 400, 600, 1000, and 1500 grit sandpaper. After that i took some polish, becuase polish is like a very fine sandpaper i believe and rubbed some on, it got rid of the dullness and fined it up.



I was also working on the engine, only a bit though ecause i ran into a little trouble. The susension, when u put the suspension on it shows an ugly spot, so what i plan on doing is filling it in and making it look like it is supost to.

I was also doing some scratch building, it is not done yet.

Cowling, all i have done was some filling of gaps and sanding, i also thinned done the diffuser (i think thats what it is) because it was to thick.




I was planning on cutting the cowling to make it look like this but most likely not.

The short answer is that CA works fine but apply it with a toothbrush (or similar) for control. The longer answer is that it depends how much strength you need in the bond and whether you are gluing PE to PE, PE to plastic, or whether you are gluing painted or un-painted parts. I have used Tamiya Craft Bond and even Tamiya Extra Then Cement on occasions; sometimes you do not require the strength of CA and its lack of elasticity and ability to craze up your paint job mean you want to avoid it.

I'd recommend experimenting gluing PE and plastic sprue with the different glues you have available already, or for sale locally, and them come to your own decision.

The model is coming along nicely and you have some good ideas on the scratch building front.

In terms of the nose-cone access panel for the front suspension, make sure you remove a little material here as, when painted, the access panel didn't fit back on mine... and when I forced it in place I split the monocoque down the middle where join is. Also, now is the time to recess out of the panel a couple of holes for the screws that keep it in place and one for the aerial.

On to the rear of the monocoque, don't forget to level out the recess where the fuel filler cap goes as the fuel filler cap, when installed does cover the entire recess. I've seen other modellers remove the roll hoop so that it can be painted separately (I didn't do that on mine but would try that if I made the model again).

P.S. You might find it useful to lay down a layer of primer and then apply putty/filler. The primer helps a little with the bonding process but the main advantage to this is that it allows you to see all the areas that need sanding/putty because the entire surface is a single tone.

Small Update:

I started scratch building some stuff. Trickyer then i thought it would be.





I went to my local hobby shop today and picked up some metal. This is what I will use it for.







This is what i plan on haveing this kit look like when i am finished. Does are not the wheels for the car they are just there to show you what i wanted the finished product to look like.



Thats all im getting done this weekend, i have 1 last exam monday so i better go study now. More next week.

Man, you are planning a lot of scratchbuilding in this build.
The start looks very promising already, so I'll definately be following this build of one of the most beautiful F1 cars ever.

Justs needs paint and assemlbe then done. I'll ask to use the good camera when its done so you can see everything clearly. It was i real pain because its not easy drilling holes on a little part like that. Its not bad so far, but im only 15 and i think it looks alright for my capability.

Perhaps you already know but a good trick for drilling/locating holes on small pieces is to mark the centre of where you want the hole to be very precisely with a pin or needle first. The indentation will make it easier for your smallest drill bit to be used for a pilot hole... then just go up your drill bits one at a time until the hole is the correct diameter. This process does take a little time but is a great way to make your holes more accurately placed, whatever the diameter.
