Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color Paints...back in the US!

Good news, the hard to get Mr Color line from Gunze Sangyo it's back trough greatmodels.com after a couple of years out of our shores. I guess that for the price (just around $2) is one of the best lacquer paints to buy. It's not only that, if not that, most japanese kits comes with their paint numbers on its color chart, if not that you have more than 200+ colors to chose.

Here'the link for it:

Are you sure they are lacquers? :-)

Agreed, especially when Great Models list them as Enamels.

Well, as far as I know, Gunze Sangyo doesn't produce enamels and the paint jar in the picture is the Lacquer Mr. Color line one. Maybe, our Japanese friends modelers from here can help.

You can find the same paints elsewhere listed as enamels too:

http://www.douglasmodels.com/product...temId=GUZMC016

Whereas this site tells us the same paints are acrylics:

http://www.hobbywave.com/modeling_su...aints/mr-color

Take special note of what it says on hobbywave, that the acrylics often get refered to as lacquers.

Re: Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color Paints...back in the US!

Greetings. Let me put some light into this subject since we only have Tamiya and Gunze Sangyo paints in our part of the world.

Gunze Sangyo has only two lines of paints, acrylics and lacquers. Acrylics have the label "Hobby Color Aqueous" while the lacquers are labeled "Mr. Color".

Another distinction between the two is the cap of the paint bottles. Acrylics have the standard caps... something like Tamiya's acrylic paints, while the lacquers have a unique protruding flat part of the cap you pinch when opening it... the photos in the previous links above are the lacquer bottles.

Here's a sample of the Hobby Color Aqueous (acrylic) bottle.

Yes, they are.
Mr. Color is synthetic "lacquer"-based acrylic paint, which is usually referred to as lacquer paint, much like Tamiya TS splays, Finisher's, Modeler's and Gaia Notes.
Mr. Aqueous Hobby Color is water-soluble "Acrylic."

Essentially both paints are made of acrylic resin, but one is solvent-based, and the other is water-soluble, so Hobby Wave is correct, but Douglas Model isn't.

Re: Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color Paints...back in the US!

Thanks god I posted this thread, because, I got these great information from you guys. I didn't know there are other people besides greatmodels.com are selling the gunze lacquers. That info from Douglas Models should be corrected by them, sometimes, there are people that says that the Mr thinners can be use also with the acrilycs and they have a thinner for that paint. It's like to say that the Tamiya small jars acrylics are the same than the TS Series lacquers.

Re: Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color Paints...back in the US!

My local hobby shop just got in the full line of Mr. Color paints. Suddenly, everything "Mr." is being carried. Paints (no sprays yet though), tools, top coats, compounds, finishing materials, all of it!

Hopefully this means this stuff will become generally available like Tamiya.

That statement is correct to a certain extent. Mr. Thinner was originally developed for Mr. Color synthetic lacquer-based acrylic paint, but it can also thin Mr. Aqueous Hobby Color (water-soluble aclyric) and Tamiya acrylic paints.
I also use Mr. Thinner for some automobile touch-up paints.
