Angry Egr? anything? my fuel economy sux...

okay i got a 1996 Neonator (2.0 DOHC Automatic) which should get amazing mileage and it used to but now i have an issue i have an egr code and i am getting tired of changing neon egrs so i was thinkin who needs it i want to take my egr off and make an intake backoff plate to bypass the portion and put a plug in my exhaust tube because i am thinking my egr is at all times staying open and pushing way to much exhaust gasses into my poor mini engine problem is will i harm my mileage or performance with this little evil plan i have? it seems to be the absolute most efficent way to run my engine

Re: EGR .....Get Bent..... please help

You can block it off and it won't affect the engines performance at all. You will however get a CEL for the code 32 (EGR).

Re: EGR .....Get Bent..... please help

okay if it wont affect the performance any will it possibly affect my fuel economy? i had figured it would enhance the Performance/Fuel Efficency due to the engine running on cleaner gasses. I have also recently noticed a large loss in my mileage (such as about 90miles from toped off to half) running it nicely and i do not have any other codes other then the EGR (32) Acually i had busted off the o2 sensor after the cat and was still getting descent mileage then it droped around the time i put a new one in. Here is the deal tho i had an extra o2 sensor from my lebaron which looked identical to the old one so i installed that but i had cut the wires origonally so i respliced them togeather from the neon harness (wht to wht brn to brn blk to blk and wht to wht again) but i had wondered if the two whites acually had different functions and if i may have attached them incorrectly it seems as tho its correct due to no codes....

Re: EGR .....Get Bent..... please help

A bad functioning EGR can hurt fuel economy. Dont know about the O2 sensor problem since I haven't looked at the wiring diagram for a Lebaron.

Re: EGR .....Get Bent..... please help

It can lower it by about 50 miles per tank.

Re: EGR .....Get Bent..... please help

anything else you could possibly think of that would cause it to drop so drasticaly? also are the white wires on the o2 sensor sensitive of which ones connect to which? i am about to just quit running to o2 it seemed to have better mpg before i re attached it

Re: EGR .....Get Bent..... please help

the thing that i noticed that was strange is that i had an egr code seince i got the car and was getting great mileage then it just disappeared(the gas mileage) do you think the fuel filter could be causing this as well?

Re: EGR .....Get Bent..... please help

I wouldn't look at the fuel filter as long as the car is running well. It wouldn't hurt your fuel economy. But rather make it stumble and misfire.
