Transmission problem, maybe

I have an 88 s-10 4x4 with the 2.8 in it. The car looks great and runs great, but it seems to run fairly high rpm on the freeway, almost 5000rpm at 65 - 70 mph. I wouldn't think this is normal, maybe my gauge cluster is messed up of something with the tranny, any ideas or places I can start trying to narrow down some possibilities would help, thanks

Re: Transmission problem, maybe

STD or auto transmission?
ID what transmission you have.
How is fluid and fluid level?
Is the trtansmission slipping or just not upshifting?
How many upshifts do you have?
On a normal take off what are the upshifts in MPH?

Re: Transmission problem, maybe

auto trans, 700r4, fluid is fine and level, doesn't leak, have not really paid attention to the up shifts, and acceleration is fine, I did notice while getting up to speed on the freeway one time that under constant acceleration it dropped into a lower gear then once I let off the gas a little the rpms jumped back up and felt like it just down shifted.

Re: Transmission problem, maybe

Count the forward gears
You should have 4 and a TCC lockup.
Give us your up shifts mph on a normal take off.
Check the TV cabel for being hooked up and working and proper adjustment.
Post back with info.

Re: Transmission problem, maybe

ok, it shifts to 4th.

1st-2nd about 18mph
2nd-3rd about 31 mph
3rd-4th about 50-56 mph depending on how much throttle i give it, but on the the tach, it shows i am going past redline on every shift after 2nd, the motor does not sound like it is winding up that much, on the freeway, it shows up almost to redline when I do 70 mph, that cant be right. I know it is no sports car but whats the deal.

Re: Transmission problem, maybe

I would check your tach for reading right.
Watch the rpm reading on a scanner or another tach.
