Tranmission swap from a 92 3.1 litre Gran prix to a 95 3.1 grand prix
My sister has a 95' 3.1 Grand prix SE(four door) and her transmission is gone. I Changed the fluids and filter about a month and a half ago and its lasted her untill now. We found a lady selling a 92' 3.1 grand prix 2 door that was in a minor front end colision. Shes selling the car for 300 and Says the transmission has'nt been giving her any problems as it has lower miles than my sisters 95.
Would the Bolt patterns and inputs all match up between the two cars? How can i find out if the tranny is good while not being able to drive it as the front does'nt steer? Another diffrence in the two cars is that my sisters 95 is single exhaust, while the 92 is a dual. The car looks to be in good shape minus the front. Would these beable to match up both being 3.1 grand prix's? Thank you very much, Delta88Driver |

Re: Tranmission swap from a 92 3.1 litre Gran prix to a 95 3.1 grand prix
No it will not,the 1992 is a cable shift and the 1995 is an electronic.the 1993 and up 4t60E will fit with a couple minor changes and I have done a lot of them. The final drive and wiring inside the transmission has to be changed sometimes.Look for a metal tag near the final drive housing and should show two big letters(such as ws,bs,aw,etc).Look for the letters on the same tag with the small letters and numbers and the third letter under those two big letters is the final letter. Those three tell what the gear ratio is and the gear ratio has to be right or the transmission will not shift.

SO i wont match up period, i mean as far as Fit and functionality? If so, thats a Bummer. But you did say the 93's and up will work with alittle alteration? What Kind of alterations?
I'm going to get under my sisters car tomarrow and see if i can see those Numbers you were talking about. Are they on the under side or on top of the tranny case? |

Sometimes you have to switch the final drive from the old transmission to the replacement transmission.Pull the cover off 4 13mm headed bolts and the final drive is held in with a c clip which does require a special tool. You can do it with 2 regualar screwdrivers also. The electrical, the side cover has to come off and the harness has to be changed sometimes.Look at the color of the wire coating. If the same, your good and reinstall the side cover. The tag I mentioned is underneath and remove it since the transmission is junk.Any transmission shop will find out the gear ratio from that tag.Take that tag to any auto wrecking yard to get the right one and an used one goes for $250.00 to $300.00.

Thanks alot, got some good info their. Im gonna get that plate off so i dont have to lug the transmission around. lol Thanks for the info.
Checked the 92' out today and indeed it is a 92 which is a bummer. The neighbor said it is possible to change the Cable shift to the electric shift. Is this possible? thanks, Delta88driver Last edited by Delta88Driver; 08-24-2008 at 05:25 PM. |
