Probably a dumb question/idea...

..but since this thread is so dead, why not. So i've read a few posts lately in threads about the dislike of those Autosticks in automatic transmissions. This is because they'll shift automatically even if left in 'manual mode'. Anyway I was thinking why isn't there a manual transmission with an automatic mode(ex. for like traffic jams)? Would that require two transmissions? Or weigh too much?
BTW: To my knowledge this doesn't exist, but if it does, whoops and sorry.

Because it takes the fun out of traffic jams.

Hmm... Very true. There isn't anything I enjoy more than sitting still and being surrounded by my favorite thing: automobiles.

So, essentially, those are all pretty much alike. A whoops and sorry is almost due. I was actually thinking about something where one still has to shift through the 1-5(or 6) pattern, like on a standard transmission. Then have a way of activating an automatic mode. To me it seems like all the transmissions you listed are still like Tiptronic, one just pushes 'up' or 'down' or paddles to shift. I, personally, still want to be able to rely on my own skill, taking the chance of misshifting.

The ones you listed are cool though, thanks.

Understandable, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to screw up on some of those. Removing the chance of misshifting and possibly breaking something isn't really not falling on to your own skill. That would be the same thing as saying I prefer shooting bolt action rifles not because its more accurate, but because I'd rather rely on my own skill on not inducing a misfire. The SMGII/III, DSG, DCT, PDK, and others are still clutch transmissions. They have a clutch (in some cases two clutches). The only difference is between that and an old school stick is the removal of the clutch pedal.

Based on what you are asking...yeah, I think it is possible to fabricate a "clutchless" (i.e. no pedal) manual that also has a shift pattern instead of an up/down. I don't see why you would want to though, because you've just removed every single bennefit of a SMG or Direct Shift box.

Also, tiptronnic=/=DSG, DCT, SMG, and what have you. A tiptronic is a computer control system in an automatic gearbox that allows the driver to over ride the torque converter and select another gear. A Sequential or Direct shifting box is not the same as a tiptronic.

Ohh, about the tiptronic. I wasn't really sure which was which as far as manual mode in autos or SMG. Thanks.
I did look up each transmission though that you listed, they are neat.

Re: Probably a dumb question/idea...

If you are going to do that you might has well just put a clutch pedal on the thing and move your left foot. lazy pile.

Re: Probably a dumb question/idea...

Its called a manual valve body. You have to shit but don't have a clutch. Or like stated above smg and such.
Wow that really was a stupid question.

I like the tactfully misplaced F in there. Well done.

No sir, you are the stupid one. For not understanding what I was thinking about and not asking.
I'm talking about having a regular transmission, clutch pedal and 1-5 gear selection. Then having a way of putting it in automatic mode. This does not exist. Probably never will, it was just an idea for those who like to use a clutch, but not all the time. ex. traffic jams

Re: Probably a dumb question/idea...

Some Rally cars use a semi-auto manual transmission. They have a clutch, used only for stopping and starting the car, then they use a sequential transmission for running through the gears.
