97 GA GT Blower noise

Hi,

I have a 97 Grand AM GT with 113,000km on it. When the blower is set to OFF there is a high pitched noise that sounds like a rusty old fan...then when I turn ON the blower (AC, fan, etc) the noise stops. You can hear a definate click and the noise stops when the fan is turned on.

That's been going on for a few weeks now, then just today the check eng light came on, and has stayed on all day. Other than the blower noise, the car runs great...

Any suggestions,

Mike - Toronto

Re: 97 GA GT Blower noise

Are you sure the noise is from the blower motor?-- when you turn off the blower- the a/c compressor also turns off-- and there is a definite noise that can occur there-- as in the following:

This sounds like classic v-5 clutch drag- the air gap has tightened and needs to be adjusted back to .020" . I have answered this several times- and usually see about 1 a week during the hot season. The noise is a scrapping/rattle only with a/c off- should see signs of metal shavings about the clutch hub. The fix is to borrow the installer/removal tool from autozone and back off the air gap a tad. This can be done on car, without removing compressor or refrigerant, and can even be done without removing the shaft nut since the nut does not bottom on the clutch drive. Pull back the plastic cover in wheel well to access

Re: 97 GA GT Blower noise

I was thinking these blowers, even tho off, still turn. If the blower is making the noise I'd say oil it and see if that'll help. You acess the blower from under the hood, pass side.

On some(most of these models) you have to cut around the housing to get to the blower motor. Yours might have been opend before which is always nice. Or it just un bolts which is best !
If you need some more instructions on the removal PM me.
