brake light: 1998 Regal GS

1998 Regal GS...146K miles. Washed car and wheels last Saturday....lots of grime and brake dust on wheel so lots of water and scrubbing to get it all off. Ever since the wash, the brake light comes on when the car is started and stays on for about 15 minutes or so...then goes off. Once the light is off, I can turn the ignition off, and then re-start the car, and brake light remains off. If I park at work for example, and start it up to go home some 8 hours later.....brake light is on again and will remain on for about 15 minutes.

Complete brake job 2 years ago, and complete inspection less than 3 months ago. All was fine....I can't help but think this is related to the wheel washing. Ideas?

Thank You.

Re: brake light: 1998 Regal GS

Is it just the BRAKE light which is also used for the parking brakes or is there an ABS light on?

One cause could be low brake fluid at the master cylinder.

And welcome to AF.

Yes, just the brake light....ABS light is normal. I've set and released the park brake a few times and that has done nothing. Brake fluid was my first thought, and I've confirmed it is topped off nicely.

Re: brake light: 1998 Regal GS

Then it sounds like a conventional braking system issue. If an ABS light was on along with TRAC OFF light then maybe the water got into the wheel sensors but that doesn't seem to be the case.

How does the brake pedal feel? Mushy or OK. When the BRAKE light is off does the light come on when you apply the parking brakes the way it should and go off when released?

Re: brake light: 1998 Regal GS

SOLVED:

I agree...it does sound like a standard braking problem. Thus, start with the most common and work to the obscure. After re-checking the brake fluid, I see the reservoir is about 3/4 or so full. I initially concluded this was "topped-off" adequately. I went ahead and added more anyways, and guess what. Light goes off. Clearly, my idea of "topped-off" and the cars electronics did not agree. Aside from feeling rather foolish, I have learned something new.

Thank You BNaylor for your help.

Regards,
Mark
