1998 Chevy Tahoe Distributor turned 17 degrees from 0

I have a "check engine" code that Pep Boys could read because it was a GM Ignition code they couldn't decipher. I took the truck to GM and they determined the code meant that the distributor has been turned 17 degrees. I guess the guy that owned the truck before me turned it for some reason. Anyways, what's involved in getting this back to zero? Is there any type of mark showing where zero is?

Thanks for the help.

What was the code?

Never seen a code (DTC) that says the dist is "17 deg" out of whack?? Do a search for "P1345" on how to set the dist up.

Hope this helps.

Question Re: 1998 Chevy Tahoe Distributor turned 17 degrees from 0

someone might have had dist out. and never got it back in right. take number 1 plug out until you get piston up on number 1 then look inside dist cap off and see if your roter is pointing to numer 1 inside dist cap.

First thing set dist as shown in picture.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/ga...hp?photo=51302
The start engine and read out camshaft retard setting with a engine capable scanner.
If your dist is turntable and not a locked solid type .
Set camshaft retard as close to 0 degrees - or + as you can get it.
Ever time you move dist you will need to speed engine over 1000 rpms for scanner to reset reading.
Has dist ever been replaced.
If the dist will not turn enough to set camshaft retard to 0.
You may have to remove dist and turn the dist gear 190 degrees to get the proper adjustment.

Is the dealer going to fix it for you?

They wanted $180 to fix it and at the time I was debating on whether to overhaul the engine (it would have been re-done anyways) so I told them not to do it. Now I've decided to hold off on the overhaul so if it's an easy fix, I'll do it.

Easy as faslling off a log.
But you will need a engine capable scanner to do it.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Whow 180 dollars for 10 minutes work.
That comes to Over a grand for per hr labor.
You was hit in the rear by the Good wrench bandit.
I do not like to price other peoples work buy in a case like yours I can not keep my mouth shut.

Old Jessie James did not make that kind of money robbing trains.
10 minutes to hook up and read scanner and 10 minutes to adjust it.
But I bet they charged you a hr diagnostic time which could/should have included the simple adjustment.
