88 Mustang 5.0 LX Idle Issue

I have a '88 Mustang 5.0L that I purchased as a project, the car while in gear idles around 1,500 rpm and with lope down to 400 to jump back up. While in nuetral or park it still idle irratic. The compression on the motor is good, it's running temp is fine, it has good oil pressure. This is a NON-MAF car, which I have very limited knowledge of. I've checked for vacuum leaks and there aren't any. Any ideas of where to look next. Thanks for the help.

Re: 88 Mustang 5.0 LX Idle Issue

I would check TPS volatge. I would go through and set idle, set TPS voltage and do the idle relearn. I have instructions on how to do this listed in the Tech Reference thread.

Re: 88 Mustang 5.0 LX Idle Issue

I decided not to mess around and installed a new TPS, IAC, and EGR. I checked the voltage at the TPS (0.95) after installation, and did the relearn, the idle calmed down, but still irratic. Maybe I just use to my 05 GT but this thing has no guts at all. It won't even power brake, is it possible the lobes on the cam are worn??

Check your timming the 5.0 love the timming to be high start off at 14 deg timming if it don't ping keep going up till it starts to ping under a load. After it pings take it down a degree.this should help with the power. A stock 5.0 should be able to blow the tires off all day long. My SVO does.
