88 cherokee has clicking sound

I bought this car almost a month ago. Did a complete tune up. Spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, battery cables, valve cover gasket, etc. Ran fine til I found out it had an exhaust leak. Just replaced the manifold yesterday and put it all back together. Today, after finishing putting it back together, we found a leak in the fuel line right where the fuel pressure regulator connects. Fixed that today. Started it up, and now it clicks. Don't know where or why, which is why I posted this. Any type of help would be greatly greatly appreciated. I'm super close to just giving up. Thanks.

email is [email protected] if you need it!!

Re: 88 cherokee has clicking sound

1st you should check your spark plugs and exhaust manifold bolts/nuts. If you didn't get one tightened down good either one could rattle.

Next, you could either get an automotive stethoscope or a long screwdriver, prybar, etc. With the engine running start touching different areas with it, watching out for moving parts (fanbelt and accesories) and plug/coil wires.

I recently replaced the cap and rotor on my wifes cherokee and didn't get the cap down quite all the way and noticed a ticking and tracked it down using a small prybar.

Hope this helps,
Dustin

Re: 88 cherokee has clicking sound

You need to be a bit more descriptive. Is it a regular click or somewhat random? Does it change with RPMs? Does it continue after you shut down the engine, while it's still hot? Without the stethoscope, you should be able to narrow the location to a general spot (like driver/pass side, front or back).

It ran fine until you discovered it has an exhaust leak? How did your discovery make it run badly?

Re: 88 cherokee has clicking sound

Thank you so much for the imput! We finally found out kind of randomly that the gasket between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust itself was rattling because it didn't get tightened down all the way, which is understandable because of the placement! haha thanks! now its just idling high, which is our next mission! we just had to replace the radiator as well. but even with all the problems, i wouldnt trade my jeep for anything! i love it
