2002 suburban wont start

I just got done putting a new belt on and before i decided to start it i figured i would tap the key and just try to turn it over to make sure the belt seated correctly. Well after i turned over on the 3rd time then tried to start it, it will now not start. It wont even turn over. Starter engages but will not turn engine over. Lights do not dim when i hold the key. I believe i fried the starter by clicking it and not letting it start??? any help would be appriciated. I checked all the fuses.

Pull off the belt and turn the key; if it starts, turn it off within a few seconds. That should help isolate the issue.
