You could just turbo the one in it and make 250+ easily.

Truthfully, that depends on the history of your B18A1, what kind of life it has had previously. If its anything like the one I have right now, i wouldn't boost it without rebuilding it first. A lot of B18A1 have been abused and are high mileage motors, so unless you know it has recently been rebuilt, I wouldn't boost it right away.

I'm planning on eventually doing a LS/Vtec, but that way down the road.

If you can get a kit for $300, buy it... at least it will have the IC and other parts you need, and in the future, if you feel that that particular charger isn't giving you what you want, you can always change it.

Rebuild your engine, regardless of how you *think* it was run.

If you can get the block and head for $100, get them... a full stock rebuild kit will only cost you about $500 with pistons and rings and bearings. (master kit)

You'll have to re-use your rods, or source out more desirable rods, if you get a early block with pencils for rods.

Everything can be gotten fairly cheap, it's a matter of how long you're willing to wait... you can build a reliable LS/Vtec with boost (making up to 250 to 300 HP) for under 2k now, if you're willing to wait for the parts to show themselves.

You also have to remember that boosted HP is VERY different than N/A HP... N/A motors have broader torque curves than boosted motors, as a general rule, meaning they start making power sooner... so if you don't have the right combination or parts, you'll be waiting all day for boost to pick up, and never getting anywhere.

Turbos are simple creatures... you either love them or don't.

Re: what should i do to the b18a1 motor that is in my ef?

Not totally true.. I b16 doesnt make peak tq till 6700 rpm..while an ls running about 8lb of boost will likely make almost twice the torque, and likely a few thousand rpm sooner..in the 3500-4000 range.. and that is why it will spank the living hell out of it NA.

Re: what should i do to the b18a1 motor that is in my ef?

The lag has nothing to do with VTEC, the lag has to do with the size of the turbo. Bigger turbo = more lag(most of the time, there are some bigger turbos that spool faster than others) So staying away from VTEC isn't going to help you there, you just have to do your research on your turbos before you do the build. And trust me, it wouldn't be all that different to just build a LS turbo either, not a whole lot you can still do to be different that doesn't require a lot of fabrication.

alot of fab, or insane secret knowledge about engines..

I give a +1 here to Endyn for parts.. they're not the cheapest, but they're some of the best. If you have the extra cash, Larry will hook you up nice with build kits and such to suit what you're doing, what you want, etc.

Larry Widmer "The Old One"

Just go there... check what you can afford, and order away...

BTW, no, I don't work for him... honestly, I'd love to, but he's into some shit that I can't even comprehend, and I consider myself a hi-quality engine builder.
