putting a cam in an 8v 1997 jetta

i want to put a larger cam in my 8v for some more hp, but i don't wanna screw up the car or adjustthe whole motor to it. what are some recommendations for putting in and finding a cam that will allow me to still have an everyday driver. will i need to adjust the springs and should i go hydraulic or solid. im just looking for something with an average lift. nothing crazy. please hekp.
