My first car (recommendations?)

Hello Automotive forums, I'm very uneducated when it comes to cars, and I'm researching them so I can get the best car. This is going to be my first car, and since you guys are car enthusiasts I thought it would be appropriate to ask what cars you would recommend. So, what car would be best for me?

EDIT: I have about 3 to 7,000 dollars to spend. It has to be cheap.

What type of car are you looking for or like the most?
Truck Suv , Seadan Sports car Fuel econmy etc.

I'm looking at sedans with good gas mileage, and my dad wants to be sure it has a good safety record. It doesn't especially have to look good, nor does it have to be fast.
