wrangler and my starter

Hello All,
Long time lurker first time posting. Anyways,

My jeep has been running great for 2 years. I go to the jeep this morning and my starter doesn't turn and STARTS to SMOKE. Obviously I need to replace the thing. However, does anyone know why it would short out? The starter is about 4 years old and has about 30,000 miles on it. I have a car amplifier connected to my battery, other than that nothing else electrically has been added? ANY GUESSES?

thanks
todd

Re: wrangler and my starter

Sounds like the starter just wore out. Take it back and have it replaced. I'm guessing you got a lifetime warranty on it. You may want to check your fly wheel, see if there are any bad spots that are causing the starter to bind up on.

Re: wrangler and my starter

MAke sure you have a good ground and power connections to the starter( ground is usually the starter housing to block but check you ground to the engine block) ALso is th starter covered in oil. Mine was, caused it to go out, fixed the oil leak and r&r'd starter, works great.
