89 Mustang new oil pump and no pressure

I just replaced the oil pump but in doing so found the shaft to the oil pump was spun. Replaced the shaft as well. Primed before starting but the oil pump is not building pressure. Back to square 1 - Any suggestions and/or advice is very welcome.

I appreciate no responses as it only allowed me to figure it out myself. I may be a woman, but I can turn a wrench with the best of y'all. The answer is; purchase yourself a oil pump prime shaft and turn it counterclockwise. - Amazing!

Cool Re: 89 Mustang new oil pump and no pressure

Okay, so I am not all that - There is still no pressure to the oil pump after priming it. The car has sat for 1 1/2 year if that helps with any suggestions. Will check tomorrow to see if oil is getting to the lifters. I really could use your thoughts, suggestions and/or advice.

Re: 89 Mustang new oil pump and no pressure

When you installed the drive shaft into the distributor shaft, is the stop on the drive shaft touching the crankcase roof ?

Did the drive shaft seat easily into the distributor shaft ?

Was a new oil pump gasket used ?

I am not maligning your abilities simply trying to cover all the bases.

If you do not have a manual on the vehicle you can go to this site:

http://www.bedlib.org/ebsco.html , type in 123456789 as the password, select ARRC in the catagories, this will take you to a "Year" selection screen, select your year then it moves on to "Make" then "Model" etc. You should then be able to select Repair procedures and other topics from a menu.

You said the pump shaft was spun ? Did you check the connecting rod bearings and crank main bearings to see if they have been damaged ?

Hope this helps.

You didn't state what motor you have some of these pumps are on the front of the motor. If this is a six cylinder like this you have to pack the gears with Vasoline. The other pumps fill with oil before installing. Basically both pumps need primed.

This is a picture of a priming tool. I run them with an electric drill.

Thank you for your input. I am trying to get the bearings check tomorrow but to answer the question, no - bearings were not checked.

Re: 89 Mustang new oil pump and no pressure

did you pack the oil pump with vasoline? does the motor have its 5 quarts of oil in the pan? did you use a drill to turn the oil pump in order to prime the oiling system? even with a drill it could take a minute to get oil pressure and also make sure youre using a good drill. once the oil pump starts pumping oil the drill will lug down.

Re: 89 Mustang new oil pump and no pressure

Once you get your oil pressure and motor running PLEASE leave a courtesy reply to let us know what the answer to the problem was. I hate it when we all give input to a problem to never find out if any of our input helped. thanks

Re: 89 Mustang new oil pump and no pressure

I've got a mechanic coming out Friday to take a look at it. I had a person helping or doing it for me and it will be the last time I require his help. Come to find out, he did not drop the oil pan, I don't believe the rod is seated properly and no to the vaseline. I will definitely post an update.
