model specific question...

i recently purchased a 1990 eagle talon tsi awd turbo.i got the car for 500.00.the body and interior is in absolute mint condition.the guy said his brother changed the timing belt...drove it and it broke.he also said the turbo was bad.im assuming because the timing went and broke that the valves are bent.

so,my first question is...am i better off fixing what is currently wrong with the motor or dropping a new motor in?which i have found a few for a reasonable price.

my second question is...i was told by numerous people that the 1990 model year was completely different from the rest of the first generation model years...especially in the ecu.so,will any first gen motor bolt in and run properly or am i going to have to locate a motor specificaly from another 1990?

thanks in advance for any information.

the valves are probably bad, and their may be some piston damage as well, better pull the head and have a look... that way you can better asses weather or not it is worth it to fix or replace the motor. the turbo is shot because A, its old and needed to die... or B, it had the piss kicked out of it, and it just died... replace it... dont waste the time rebuilding a 14b when you can buy one for $50...

the engine is a 6 bolt, you need a 6 bolt to replace it with, technically, any 4g63 motor will work, 1g, or 2g, but since the 7 bolts are more prone to crankwalk, (not to mention you would have to reverse the 6-bolt swap) it would be easier to just replace it with another 6-bolt.

Re: model specific question...

I should note that only a 6 bolt will go in with ease. 2g motors WILL require a rather difficult (for the novice) swap and would be pointless anyway. I would personally just drop in a new motor, even if you do the work fixing whats wrong can get pretty costly and its total assrape if you have to have shop do it.

There are many differences between 90 and the rest of the 1g cars, and I admit that it can be somewhat a pain. The ones I can think of off the top of my head include the CAS, coil pack, transistor pack, shifter, some tranny parts, t-case, and the ECU. Most are small things such as extra pins, switched pins, different spline counts, fitments, ect. If I'm not mistaken, many of them are switchable with a little work.

So what color is it?

Re: model specific question...

its a deep purple color.with the silver trim.the trans and transfer case and motor are all int he car.the motor is bad however but the transfer case and trans are fine.so,is it going to be a pain to swap in another 1g 6 bolt motor or must it be a 1990 specific 6bolt motor?

Re: model specific question...

you can use any year 6 bolt motor in a 90 car as long as you make sure to use the throtle body with the tps, coilpack, and CAS that came with the engine in your car right now..swap thoes things over and everything else that hooks up to the engine is the same..

Re: model specific question...

You arent in MN are you? If you are, dont particularly want it, and the body actually is spotless as you say, I'd come get it from you.

The throttle body and fuel rail are also a little different than 91-94.
