2000 Jetta brake lights stuck on!

'00 Jetta GLS 2.0L A/T w/ 74K.
Just came back from the store and noticed that all the brake lights were staying on, even with ignition off and key removed. Pulled the fuse which makes them go off, but they are still stuck when the fuse is replaced. When the fuse is replaced in the block, the shifter interlock clicks, but that is probably ok.....
I know this was a VW recall, as the brake light switch was already fixed about 2 years ago at the dealer (to avoid any future problems, ha!), but I really don't want to go back to the dealer and get handed a line of crap about it being something else.
I read under the MK4 FAQ's about a cleaning repair to make the brake lights come back to life, will this work in reverse and make them go off? Where is the switch located anyway? OR...is it something else?
I know someone out there has dealt with this particular VW electrical oddity, please help if u know the answer!

Re: 2000 Jetta brake lights stuck on!

vw did have the WG recall back in the day. Then they updated the brake light swtich about 4 times (basically changed the color from grey to black then purple) then re-issued the recall again using a delphi part (not the poorly designed bosch one). its green and square. Call the dealer and see if there is a recall open for your car. Have the vin ready!

Re: 2000 Jetta brake lights stuck on!

Thanks for the reply! I swapped out the purple switch for a black one out of a salvage car, and it works perfectly.
Was the black Delphi switch a "good" one, or should I still call the dealer to follow up on the recall (again)?

As of right now any brake light problems with Jetta's and New Beetle's the dealers will be happy to fix problem at no cost.
