I lost 4th gear yesterday after driving for a good while. Then I had to drive home (another 10-15 miles) and 1st, 2nd, 3rd make whiny sound, 4th gone completely, and 5th slipping out of gear. I just had the bearings and rear main seal replaced along with an exedy racing clutch and ACT flywheel about 2000 miles ago... Note: tranny has 182k miles
Now my question is this: Is it cheaper to just swap in another Si tranny or have mine rebuilt? I don't want to get robbed and I don't have much money. If it's cheaper to get a replacement Si tranny and somebody has an extra one that is in decent shape that would be nice. Also, can I use my new bearings and seals with a replacement tranny or am I just out the money I spent? Please help. Thanks in Advance. K

Re: si tranny just went kaput
I just called the shop that did the work and they said they wouldn't charge me to look at it. So I'm going to go there this afternoon (hopefully I'll make it - about 35 miles). They asked me if it was leaking oil... why would it be if they fixed it? Sheesh. I appreciate you looking around cuz I heard they're few and far between now. I'll report back once I get an estimate. Thanx.

dont forget, any D-series tranny from the 88-91 CRX/Civics will also bolt right up with it, but IMO the SI is better, but incase you cant find an SI just go with a DX one

Re: si tranny just went kaput
i hate the dx tranny...well for gas it's good, but i went through 5 trannies in my car lol. Me and Bambam89lx just recently put in another Si tranny in mine since my tranny was stuck in 2nd gear.

Re: si tranny just went kaput
I called the Japan Engine Inc. place and they're going to hook me up. Thanks for the replies. Most likely saved me money and saved my 4g rex
On a separate note: I've read others are selling their cars. People keep telling me to sell mine, but it's PAID FOR and 30mpg is awesome! Thanks again, y'all... K

Re: si tranny just went kaput
I got the Si tranny for $300 + $80 shipping from their Ohio location to the shop the rex is at in Greenville, SC so I don't even have to touch it. And the shop wants about $220 to install it. They were like "assuming the clutch is okay" and it should be cuz it's only got 2k miles on it and they put it in. The guy who actually put it in looked at it and said the seals they replaced held and no oil leaked but there was metal in the oil. I hope all goes smooth. Anyway, Japan Engine Inc. said it would take two days to get there (I ordered it yesterday morning)... and hopefully the shop will put it in quick... I need wheels! One thing I forgot was to ask about their guarantee... damn... maybe it's on their webpage ?

Re: si tranny just went kaput
I looked it up and the transmissions Japan Engine Inc sells are rebuilt and pulled from Japanese cars with low miles... and come with 6 month/unlimited miles, so the extra 150 is well worth it in my book...

So you got a JDM civic Si tranny? If so then thats the ZC tranny and now your going to need to buy an intermediate shaft and axles. Ooops.

Re: si tranny just went kaput
Wow, that sux for you. I would NEVER recommend rebuilding a trans that old with that many miles. Like you found out you can get a trans for $300.00 . . . . .Live & learn.
If you were to rebuild the trans yourself, 1 gear set will cost approx. $200.00 for parts only. If you have the trans all apart it's very wise to replace every bad part. By the time your done you'll easily spend $400.00 on parts alone & that's if you do it yourself. Have some one else do it, Add labor + parts mark-up. |
