hard to shift

sometimes it is super easy to push in my clutch pedal. then other times it is really hard and i can only get it like half way down, and it dose not shift easy. also many times it will just start spinning really bad while driving. i have bled it before and that did not help much. some guys that i work with think that it might be the slave cylinder. what do you guys think? how do i know if the slave is going out.
thanks.

LOL, no prob. When you're logged in, go to the top left section of the screen where it says User CP, when it sends you to that Control Panel screen there will be a column on the left with the first item labeled Signature. You can add pictures too if they don't exceed a certain size limit.

I'm not familiar with AWDs, sorry can't help.

Re: hard to shift

Thats very odd that the pedal gets that stiff after a while. I would check for binding when it does this and make sure nothing is in the way of the slave cylinder moving. I guess the hydroliics could be going bad and f*ing up.

Re: hard to shift

You also said your clutch is slipping? Your clutch may be going bad anyways. Your going to have to drop the tranny pretty soon to replace it. I would check everything out while your in there. Make sure nothing is binding.

also this is off the topic but i am going to swap to a 6 bolt motor and was wondering if i need a 1 gen tranny for it to work.
thanks

only thing i can think of is the flywheel having a high spot... if you are not leaking anything, the clutch wouldnt get HARDER from a leaky slave/master/clutch line...

Re: hard to shift

Is there shit in the way under your pedal? Grease that bad boy up and see if that helps.

Re: hard to shift

Sounds like you don't have your clutch pedal adjusted right. If it's adjusted too much either way, it will either be super light, go all the way to the floor, and still not be completely disengaged, or else get very stiff and not completely engage. That causes the clutch to slip. What happens is that the master won't close all the way, and the fluid builds up pressure on the clutch.

First of all, to check your slave, push the little boot aside and see if there is fluid on the rod. If there is, make sure its not just oil or grime from the motor, then your slave is bad, and you should replace it. To check your master cylinder, fell THAT rod, and if there is fluid on that, replace it.

To adjust your clutch, get under your dash and find the master cylinder rod. Use a 12mm wrench to loosen the lock-nut on the rod, and then use a small(i think 8mm) wrench to turn the rod. The rod is completely smooth and cylindrical, except for a small flat area. anyways, turn the rod counter-clockwise. This will loosen it. In your case, I'd say turn it about 2 turns. Then go out for a drive, let the car warm up, and see how it feels, and more importantly how it shifts. If it still gets ultra-stiff and slips, repeat the above-mentioned step. You want the clutch pedal to be pretty easy to push down for about an inch or two, and then start to get hard the farther down you go. But remember to make your final adjustments to that rod when the car is at normal op temp and running.

Re: hard to shift

ok guys i know this thred is kinda old but im havin about the same problems, i have a 90 ,tsi, awd, stock to the bone, its hard to get it into gear even when the car in not running and it grinds most, well all the time now, when i first got the car running it would not go into gear all all, i replaced the slave, it was bad (leaking) bled the hell out of it, still no clutch, relpaced the master beld the hell out of it again, then i had every gear but first, it would grind big time but after playing with with pedal (pumping it a few times) it seamed to go into gear ok, but now i cant get it into any gears, the car sits , its my project car i bought about 7 months ago so im not drivin it and i dont get y i would be able to put it in gear fine one day but not the next, im thoughts are eather, miss adjusted pedal, shift linkage, or somthin in the trans its self.
ANY input would be great

thanks guys
