Exclamation Check engine light P0440, P0171

Hello Everyone, I have a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina with a 3.1L 3100 V6. I have been getting a Check engine light and read it with a scanner. I am getting (P0440 "Evap emission Control System Malfuntion" and P0171 "System Too Lean *bank 1)" I have already pulled the Mass air Flow sensor to get cleaned by using MAF spray cleaner because of P0171. What i wanted to know is in my case would it be best to first replace the "Canister Purge Solenoid" before breaking down and replacing the charcoal canister? The car is running rough and want to know the best way to remedy the problem. I have listed the Freeze data at the bottom if it will help diagnose the issue.

DTC That caused Freeze Frame: P0440
Throttle Position 9.4%
Engine RPM 1473 RPM
Load value 7.0%
Map Sensor 55 KPA
Coolant Temp 192 F
Short Term Fuel Trim1 7.8%
Long term fuel Trim 1 18.7%
Short term Fule trim3 -86.6%
Long term fule trim 3 -17.4%
Fuel system 1 Closed
Fuel system 2 n/a

Thanks in advance guys i love the site and information it provides!!!!

Re: Check engine light P0440, P0171

Welcome to AF, do a site search for p0440 plenty of info, do not just replace parts here. 171 is a lean condition as you know, any unmetered air air entering the engine can cause this as well as a dirty maf. look at this link for more info.http://service.gm.com/gmspo/mode6/pd...c31M_W__yE.pdf

Re: Check engine light P0440, P0171

Hey Maxwedge thanks for the reply. I justed wanted to give a quick follow up on the car. It turns out that I did not have to replace the purge evap solenoid. I had recently just changed the spark plugs from Ac Delco to Bosh platinum plus's. When i had taken the Coil pack off as well as the cable connected to it i noticed what was goin on. The Purge solenoid had one of the cable disconnected. I am not talking about the electrical cable but one of the valve cables that hook into the solenoid. There are only two of the cables that hook into it. I had hooked it back up to the solenoid and with all the spark plugs replaced it started up fine, and not about 2 miles down the road the check engine light went out so problem solved. I wonder if maybe it was disconnected from a mechanic by accident or what, I will have to keep a close eye on it.

Great, good find but the 0171 is unrelated, this may come back.
