Does anyone know (420a) how much oil will drain out if you take off the oil filter when cold without draining the oil pan first? Are we talking the whole amount or just a little bit? I'm not sure where the oil that flows through the filter is directly coming from to begin with. I basically just need to take off the filter, and save as much oil as possible and as quickly as possible (short on time). Thanks

Re: Oil Drain question from filter
Just as much as it does when you drain the pan. The filter housing sits above the oil level in the pan, so all that comes out is what's built up on top of the filter.

Re: Oil Drain question from filter
He means that just as much oil will come out as if you where changing the oil and took the filter off. It wont be a huge amount but it will be some.

Re: Oil Drain question from filter
So like a quart? I'm just trying to figure out since I'm doing this at my place instead of my parents garage tomorrow and trying to use as little amount of everything as possible. plus I don't feel like buying 4 more quarts of oil (raising this months total to 13 quarts)

Re: Oil Drain question from filter
The oil filter will be full and some will be sitting on top of it but not a long should drain. Put a pan under the filter when you take it off and you will be fine.

Re: Oil Drain question from filter
Cut the bottom off of a gallon of milk and use that for a temporary catch pan. Unscrew the filter and just let it drop down into the jug and the remaining oil from above the filter should follow it into the jug, you shouldn't have any mess at all.
EDIT: Any why have you put so much oil in the car this month? |

Re: Oil Drain question from filter
Cool. Sounds like I'll do that tomorrow then. I have my big catch bucket at my parents but I don't feel like getting it. It's full too lol
Regular oil change first. Installed sandwich adapter. Leaked all over so drained and redid it. Worked fine for a day, and now leaked on a 100 mile trip I took on Sunday. Blah. And now I have to do it again, but this time adapter is just coming out. I think I know why it's leaking... has very smooth sides which I think isn't sealing right. I sand papered one side to rough it up and seems to help some. I should gasket seal or something them too but not going to.

Re: Oil Drain question from filter
Sandwich adapter....hmmm...would that be something you could use as an oil feed for a turbo???

Re: Oil Drain question from filter
Jason, I was PMing you but then realized this may be useful to others.
I noticed you have a sandwich plate for your oil cooler. Has yours ever leaked? Block to sandwich is perfect, but its leaking from sandwich to filter. O-ring is oiled up nice and good but it's leaking only there. The filter is on as tight as it can go too. Any ideas. I'll probably be calling you when I get there so expect a ring. Also, is the surface of the plate textured or 100% smooth or painted?
