new to the scene....

whats up everyone... new to the dsm scene but old to the tuner scene... I just piced up a 91 eagle talon AWD turbo... and well I am not sure were to start. the cat who originally had this car getto fabed the exhaust and pretty much everything else... dont get mewrong with the new turbo and the oddly done exhaust plus the few other things he has done this car pulls hard as hell.... but like I said its all been half assed and well I want it all done right. he accually took the exhaust off of a dually deisel and fabed it onto the car... also the turbo when you get into the high rpms the turbo surges up high.. again not sure why it does it...but as long as I keep the rpms lower then it will boost fine... anyways does anyone know of any good reputable companies to get parts from? and that are fairly priced? thanks again for the help... oh and I did search but I like user opinion... on this one... places that you have delt with personally..

Re: new to the scene....

Welcome to the DSM world.

Firstly, do a tune up. Plugs, wires, oil, fuel filter, air filter, coolant flush, compression test... just make sure everything is in good running condition. Also do a boost leak test. That will find a ton of problems.

What turbo are you using? Stock? Sounds like you may have boost creep if it "surges up high". Do you have a boost gauge? If so, what's it reading.

As for exhaust, it all depends what you're looking for. SBR, eBay... there's a ton of DSM sites around. I'm sure others will post more since I can't remember anymore.

Re: new to the scene....

Vendors: DSMTuners.com has a list of preferred "sponsoring" vendors that have done us and the website well over the years.

Boost issue in high RPMS: Could be that the exhaust is too free-flowing (yeah, I know how that sounds) and you're getting boost creep. If the turbo is internally gated, porting the WG hole and/or getting a larger flapper can help eliminate this.

Welcome, and don't be afraid to use the search even though you like the opinions...here, as well as other sites. The last one of these cars rolled off assembly about 10 years ago, so most everything have been tried/reviewed/etc.

Re: new to the scene....

As for vendors, I'd recommend getting your stuff either from Modern Automotive Performance or Extreme PSI. The guys at MAP are all good, knowledgable guys and their prices are fair as hell. Anything I want in the future will come from them and if they dont have it I'll go with Extreme PSI.

You should do some reading up on these cars. Theres a lot of really good tech articles on DSMtuners as well as upgrade paths that you should check out. VFAQ has a lot of really great stuff as well, as does our tech article section here and the 1000AAQ site.

Re: new to the scene....

Re: new to the scene....

If you're surging that high, you're risking your motor. Can you snap a pic of the turbo?

Re: new to the scene....

I called the guy and he said its a big 16g turbo that is on there now. he also said it has a 30mm wastegate on it but the flange is opening up fully.

Re: new to the scene....

Actually, the wastegate flapper physically will go all the way open, but unless he has the wastegate actuator mod done the flapper is only opening to like 45-60 degrees or something. Best thing you can do is port the flapper hole and stuff and getting the 34mm flapper probably wouldnt hurt either. Also, I think porting or getting a better flowing o2 sensor housing would help.

Lando's right too, 25 psi is very not good on a stock car. Definately keep it low until you can get it fixed.

Re: new to the scene....

4"!! Damn that's too big. 3" will do plenty. I agree with Lando on this one.

Re: new to the scene....

Holy shit 4". That is way too big to do anything good for that car.

Re: new to the scene....

An external wastegate will be the easiest and "best" fix, but also the most costly. I personally think that if you are going to go with an external WG then you should do it manifold mount style, which means you will need a new manifold as well as the WG and a dump tube.

Re: new to the scene....

ok what would be a good combo as far as the wg, manafold, and dump? the only manifold that I can find it a gay pace setter...
