Got a brand new 2.2 motor, need some answers!
Hey all, my friend has a 95 2.2L automatic.......270,000KMs on her......well we found a bought a brand new 2.2 from a 97, ZERO KMs on it, still has the factory oil filter with the J on it......$100, and came with the tranny(Auto) exhaust, gas lines, brake lines, Drivetrain, Computer.....pretty much everything. His car is OBD1, and this motor is from a 97 test car, so me and him are both wondering, will the engine go in flawless? Or what is going to need swapping or changing to get it in and working. Hopefully Cody, you may know, cant wait to hear this brand new motor in his car, its going to sound nice........the guy pulled it in 2000 and its been sitting since in a barn and he had all that shit and just wanted to clear his barn out of everything so he pretty much gave it away............someone hopefully can help here, we want to put it in asap just need to know whats involved. thank you whoever can help!

Re: Got a brand new 2.2 motor, need some answers!
Use the engine and trans if its a 3 speed trans since thats what he should have had stock, his old ECU and engine wiring harness (don't use the new one with OBD2 the interior dash harness won't work with an obd2) and everything will function just fine.
Before you do anything major, since the engine has been sitting around for a long time, prolly was never rotated while sitting. Get some fogging oil and spray each of the cylinders with it. Let it sit for a couple mins and then rotate the engine over by hand. Get a compression tester and make sure the piston rings are still holding compression. Since its sat for soo long the rings may have rusted to the cylinder wall and the extend of the rust wouldn't be know unless you tear down the motor. If the compression test looks good throughout the 4 cylinders, should be good to go.

Re: Got a brand new 2.2 motor, need some answers!
if it is from 1997 and was pulled in 2000 and still had 0 miles on it pull the oil pan. While you are there check to see if the oil that is in there (or was) didn't destroy the seals. you can also inspect the engine for any issues while you are there. I will agree with the lube as well. maybe pre-lube in some places as well.
Also when you get the motor in the car pull the fuel pump fuse and turn the car over. get some oil pressure up in the engine. |

Re: Got a brand new 2.2 motor, need some answers!
Hey Cody, yeah we threw fogging oil in and turned it by hand for a while it was seized at first but we got it turning, all is good.........now, his car has the 3 speed auto trans, and the one we got with the motor is a 4 speed auto, like the one from my z24............what do we do, so just use the new engine and tranny and thats it??? Dont need to switch anything else? all the OBD1 engine wiring will plug and play onto this motor? thanks guys :P

Re: Got a brand new 2.2 motor, need some answers!
how the hell does he have a 4t40e in that thing? To my knowledge they only came in the 2.3 and 2.4L till 98 when they put them in everything. Gotta switch the transmissions over because the wiring for a 3 speed is different and so are the shift cables if i recall correctly. I would also do what 91 tercel said. While you've got the transmission seperated from the long block, replace the rear main seal and drop the oil pan to check everything out in there. Also, i forgot out priming the engine with oil when you get it in. I keep forgetting thats just 2nd nature to me when i start my cars up after storage.

Re: Got a brand new 2.2 motor, need some answers!
No no no his 95 has the 3 speed auto tranny......the one that came with this motor we bought is on the motor already and its the 4 speed auto. how can we install the 4 speed on there? or would it be easier just to take it off the motor and use his 3 speed?

Re: Got a brand new 2.2 motor, need some answers!
You are lucky. You found a good deal. I need a new motor for my 94.Wish i could find a deal like that. Good luck, and i would swap trannys(use the 3 speed). While you have the tranny out you should change the filter, clean the pan, and put good fluid in the tranny. Preventative maintence stuff.lol

Re: Got a brand new 2.2 motor, need some answers!
Use his old 3 speed. There is just waay to much that would need to be done in order to have it properly.
E.g. new transmount welded to frame, drive shafts, etc...

Re: Got a brand new 2.2 motor, need some answers!
Wow its finally done. It was a LOT of work. took us 2 nights. Well first off we pulled the original motor out and that was that. We installed the headers he bought on the new motor, looks good, drop it back in and would get no spark, so had to use the old coil pack. Then we were getting spark but still would not start. Found out had to use the 95 injectors, the 97 ones are different. so it fired up fine, so we put the exahust on, new cat, and welded it all up was really loud, took it for a test run, overheated by the end of the road. So brought it back, found out it wasnt getting coolant. When we put the new motor in, had to switch the egr with the one he has been running because the 97 one is electronic, and it has a thermostat on it too. So changed the waterpump thinking that was the problem, it wasnt, took it for another test run after the waterpump change, still overheated. So brought it back, the rad hose had no fluid in it so he pulled it off, got covered and sprayed in the face head to toe with burning coolant. That aside, figured out the 97 motor had a thermostat on the bottom of the rad hose, which wasnt needed because there is one from the 95 egr......and this one on the rad hose was sezied which would explain everything overheating and such build up of pressure, took it out and finally, runs fine! NICE and quiet, its a brand new 2.2, sounds nice, and runs nice and smooth. 2 days of hell, but its finally over lol! Well worth the $100! for the motor!

Did a few already Cody takes me roughly 2 hours from start to finish. Cooking a box of Kraft Dinner is easier then a pre 99 5 spd eco swap
