I recently had the "check engine" and "oil" lights come on, to my complete surprise. I quickly checked the oil to find that it was not even registering. I took it in for an oil change (was near time) and a diagnostic which found nothing. I get the oil changed regularly 3-5K miles (have owned the car since new). There has been no oil on the ground nor smell of burning oil so am at a loss on what would cause this. I am very diligent about caring for the car and regular maintenance. It has about 115,000 miles and for a Honda, not enough to have a major issue in my opinion.
Any advice on what it could be and what I might tell the dealer to look for? I have found some info on the internet of others w/this same issue in same year or close to this year but no recalls by Honda. Thanks! |

Some engines do consume oil. Not to much you can do about it. You MUST watch for this.
How often do you check your oil level? Sam

Re: Check Engine Light & Oil Loss - 2000 Honda Accord Cpe
Rule of thumb is one quart for every 3K miles. So with a 4 qt engine, you are down to 2 1/2 qt at 5K miles. Common leak areas are the valve cover and oil pan bolts. Sometimes you can have a leak and it won't drip enough to see on the floor but if you get underneath the car you can see it. The other place is out the tail pipe but then you would see some blue smoke.

Re: Check Engine Light & Oil Loss - 2000 Honda Accord Cpe
I was actually down 4 qts at 4k miles........ this time around. It seemed about 2 qts the last oil change time for about 3500 miles. Seemed too much for a well taken care of car and just over 100k miles. This is my 3rd honda and I have not had a car (even my american & german cars) use this much oil all of sudden. Some of the 60s and 70s models (mostly american) that family have owned had issues like this. I have gathered some good options to have the service folks look at when I take it in in a few days so that has been helpful. I am hoping a not so expensive fix can be found so my daughter (who is turning 16 soon) can drive the car for awhile......We will see
Thanks to all who have provided info so far! |

Re: Check Engine Light & Oil Loss - 2000 Honda Accord Cpe
I'm having similar issue, but probably worst. I don't have engine checklight but I have to fill up at least 2 qt. every 2 weeks or so. I drive about 300 miles a week. I noticed it there are residue at the bottom of the tranny, possibly leaks around there? It's not enough to make it drip or see wet oil, I just have no clue on where all the oil goes... No blue smoke from muffler and my radiator fluid is nice and green.

rear main seal and front seal are the forgotten seals but they have to be replaced usually with timing belt and water pump
