timing cover leaking anti freeze
I have a 1999 dodge ram 1500 5.2L . theres a slight leak of anti freeze coming from the timing cover area, didnt even know there was anti freeze around there, anyone else ever have this problem? Took it to a shop and they gave an estimate of $700.00 to replace the timing cover gasket, is this for real?

Re: timing cover leaking anti freeze
Did you tell them to put on a timing cover gasket or fix the anti freeze leak? They will do (AND CHARGE YOU) what you ask if it is your diagnosis because if it does not fix your problem they don't care. They did what you asked them to do. Try asking them to fix the antifreeze leak and see if they tell you it is the timing cover. My guess is it would more likely be a water pump leak dripping from the cover.

Re: timing cover leaking anti freeze
Take a close look at the thermostat housing gasket always a problem and kind of hidden.

Re: timing cover leaking anti freeze
I just had this happen with my 1992, the seal between the engine block and the timing cover gave out.
Let me tell you this, its a pita to replace. The process took me a week to do in my driveway between tearing it down, pulling the oil pan and replacing both seals (Oil pan seal usually needs replacing when you pull the timing cover). I also replaced the pump at this time, since its a pita to do anyway, might as well get it done.
