Headlights won't work, please help!

Hey Everyone;

This question is concerning my wifes 2001 Grand Am GT.

I would really appreciate some help on this if you don't mind.

The Service Vehicle Soon light came on the dash and according to the owners manual, it has something to do with the automatic headlights.

No doubt as they do not work now and the only way I can get the headlights on is to turn them on manually and only the high beams work. I notice now that when I first start the car, the headlights come on, flash several times, go off and the light comes on the dash (service vehicle soon) and the headlights go off.

I've checked all the fuses but I don't know where to go from here.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer.

My information shows, the multifunction switch controls the ground circuit for the high and low beams. I'd check the ground circuit. On the right hand headlite assembly, dark blue wire is ground for the low beam, pink wire is ground for high beam, orange wire is voltage.

Welcome to AF bmcduffy-cox.net

The SVS could be many things not ust the lights. This would require a high quality scan tool to read the trouble code(s).

Also it sounds like your auto light control isnt working, or possibly a relay is bad.
I would check the fuses for the ALC and daytime running lights, also the relays for your lighting system.

This could also be your multi function switch malfunctioning do to having dirty contacts inside the MFS.
This does happen often to the newest N bodies.

If you do a search here or in grand am forums you will find the procedure for removing and cleaning the MFS, it might help.

Good luck
