99' Alero Power Steering Issues
I have a 99' Alero GLS, 3400 engine, and it has the variable power steering. What is happening:
At idle, or driving slowly around a corner, the power steering is almost non-existant. As I increase the rpms the power steering is super easy. I wonder if it's possible for the system to be working backwards (tight steering at low speeds, loose at high speeds). Or if this just means a bad p/s pump? Any help would be appreciated, as I can't seem to find much info on this other than how to replace parts. |

Re: 99' Alero Power Steering Issues
Sounds like you pump is dying.
You could try and flush the system first and see if that helps, if it doesnt you'll have to replace the pump. Thier are procedures for both of those here. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...lay.php?f=2148 Hope that helps.

Re: 99' Alero Power Steering Issues
Yeah I'll probably replace the pump. The lines are looking worn and the rack is leaking too.
The rack looks like it's leaking pretty good from the input shaft. Is there a seal kit I can purchase to rebuild the rack since it's like 400 bucks new and I payed 500 for this car? |

Re: 99' Alero Power Steering Issues
Yeah the lines should be replaced when replacing the pump or the rack.
I thought thier was a kit available at most part stores... you sure its the rack and not just a line dripping or spraying ? Sometimes it is hard to tell because thier's no room down there. You can find R & P's cheaper then that, I thought I heard Advance auto sells them for around $170 + core charge, might check into that. Good Luck
