Question 454

I was just wondering what is the hp for a 90 454 out of the 454ss, and what is the hp for a 97 454.

Re: 454

im not exacly sure so im really not helping you but, i do know that that 454ss really are not as cool as they sound and not much more if any than a vortec 5.7. The 97 454 assuming it is a vortec would be the best bet.

Re: 454

I'm not looking for a new engine. I have a 350 Vortec in my truck that runs like a champ. I was just looking for the hp cause I was curious. I've raced a GMC Sierra extended cab long bed 454 vortec and beat it. I was just wondering what I would do agianst a 454 non vortec smaller truck like the 454ss.

Re: 454

The TBI 454's were only rated around 250 HP. Not sure about the Vortec 454 but it should be much better than the TBI version.

Re: 454

The 1990 454SS would have been 230hp, 385 ft-lb of torque with probably a 3.73 axle. I think they came with a 3-speed automatic. Basically, a 1996+ regular cab short-wheelbase with a 350 Vortec would keep up with it fairly well.

For 1991 it was boosted to 255hp/405 ft-lb and I think a 4.10 axle was standard along with the 4-speed auto. If I remember correctly, they ran 0-60 in about 7-seconds flat. Not too bad I guess, and the F150 Lightning was comparable. I used to have a 1998 reg cab short bed with the 350, and I'd bet the 91+ 454SS would have outrun me.

For the 3/4 and 1-ton trucks with the Vortec (1996 and up) the 454 was rated at 290hp and 410 ft-lbs. I don't know at what rpms these peaks were at, but would guess that the peak torque appeared at pretty low engine speeds. A hell of a stump puller but considering the added weight of the 3/4 ton chassis components, I could see a 1/2-ton 350 vortec pulling away from it.

Re: 454

I finnaly got to race a 454ss, we have a couple in town and I finnaly found 1 with a young guy in it. He had some kind of dual exhaust. First we went from a role he got a better down shift and he took off a little bit then he hit the brakes cause of a red light then we went from a stop and we were pretty much dead even though 1st gear and then the middle of 2nd gear I started pulling away from him and I was probably a car or 2 infront of him when I hit my brakes and then he wouldn't believe me at the next stop light when I told him that all that is done to my truck is K&N intake and Flowmaster dual exhaust.

what year is your truck ? his engine might be to old and not have the H.P. it came with. I took a 454 from a 1989 suburban put an edelbrock air gap and a 750 cfm Holley double pumper carb and there is nothing on the streets that could see me

Re: 454

My truck is a 97 Sierra, 5.7 Vortec, all that is done is true dual flowmaster exhaust, and a K&N intake. I talked to the guy and got to see under his hood. His truck is all original besides dual exhaust. It had a little over 70,000so I doubt different motor, he said he was the 2nd owner and the 1st owner was his uncle. Also that thing was in perfect condition could tell someone took really good care of it.

Re: 454

some 454 are slow at higher rpm. i know some man that was selling his truck 1976
with a 454 went for a test drive it was very fast at first gear but got to second and it didint advance more it must be a problem with the transmissions

Re: 454

I know some trucks are gear'd up to be faster at low end and not high end. My truck keeps pulling through top and bottom of the gear. My 2nd gear is when I usally take off on people and that truck was no different. I know for the 90454ss it has a 3 speed automatic with 3:73 gear, and the 91454ss it has a 4 speed automatic with 4:10 gears, so that truck I raced should pull good through a whole 1/4 mile.

Re: 454

so the 454ss has a 3 speed automatic? what the heck?!!? lol did they make a custom unit for that truck or did they have a bunch of turbo 400's laying around and didnt know what to do with them? as for it being kinda inadequate... it doesnt take much to make a 350 or a 454 for that matter freaking powerful as hell... all you gotta do is throw a sweet cam in there, a good intake, and some good flowing heads to top it off, as well as a nice 750cfm holley. i have seen dynos of 350's getting well over 400 horses under 6000 rpm and still having better than stock torque down low. its just kinda illegal to do on newer vehicles lol with emissions laws and all...

by the way, all else equal, a vortec 350 makes about the same horsepower as a tbi 454 does, although i dont know what torque curves compared look like. im sure that the vortec 454 spanks the hell out of the 350 vortec in the same weight of car though

Re: 454

I bet if there was a truck like mine with a 454 vortec if would spank me. I've raced a 454 vortec and beat it but it was an extended cab long bed 2500. So big ass truck. and most trucks that have that motor there gear'd for pulling not straight away power, so I doubt I'll have the chance to see what happens.
