1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Hello all,
I have a question I hope someone can maybe help me with. I just bought a 93 mitsubishi eclipse with a 1.8L non turbo car. The trouble I am having is when you start it there is a misfire on #2 and the engine just floods out (but keeps running)so much gas will run out of the exhaust. I placed a screw driver on the fule enjector and it sounded like it was not working. Like it was maybe stuck open, so I taped on it and then could hear it ticking like it was now working. Could it still be the injector? What do you think. No lights come on in car I even unpluged injector and motor didn't change any. I hope someone can help me out. Thank you, Joe |

Re: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Hi Joe.
So tapping on it made it work? Did it continue working the rest of the time or did it just stop again then? First, make sure the injector is clean. Run a tank of F.I. cleaner through and pull the injector and check out the condition of it. I would say make sure that the connection between the injector and the harness are secure and tight in there. Maybe even disconnect it and clean out to make sure the contacts are not dirty. It may be the actual injector itself though. The car is old, and if the cylinder is flooding with fuel, it may be open like you said. However, it could also be an ECU problem, causing the injector to stay open instead of pulse or whatnot. If you want to test out the injector method, you can find them really cheap on eBay and replace the one in there. I believe there is a way to test the injectors themselves, but someone else will have to fill that in. Hope something there helps.

Re: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Thank you for the reply. It seems like the injector stayed working but it continued to flood out. I will pull the injustors out to insure they are clean.
I was once told if you spray the end of the injector with carb cleaner and a little air you could clean up any dirt that might be in there. Thank you, Joe |

And the tank of F.I. cleaner never hurts to do anyways.

Re: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Well I took the injector out. The plastic on the end that goes into the motor is cracked. Could this be a problem or is it just a cover? I even tried to blow thru it and at first it seemed like I could but then I tried it again and I could have been wrong. I am still going to try to clean it out first then go from there.
Thank you again, Joe |

Re: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
I would guess that there would be your problem. F.I.s are complex and really need to be in the best physical shape. Seems like a crack would cause the extra fuel to be spilling into the engine. I would replace the injector and see if the problem persists. If not, then its something else, but that really seems like that's your problem there.

Re: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
I would go ahead and replace it. You could pick up a set of used ones really cheap.

Re: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
OK here is what I did. I swapped two injectors but it seems as if the problem stayed at injector 2. So as the car was running I unpluged injector 1 (the one I swapped) and the engine began running rough so it told me that one was working. Then I did the same with injector 2 (the one that was the problem to start with)and no change. If its not the injector would it be the ECU unit? Can this ECU unit only cause 1 injector not to work?
Thank you, Joe |

Re: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Usually with the ECU it would case all of them to have an issues. Usually. It seems the like it may be wiring to me. Did you check the actual connector and see if it was in decent shape or whatnot? Make sure the rest of the wire isn't burnt, chewed through, or missing.
That's all I got. Hope you can figure it out.

Re: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Yeah injector pulses are usually instantly tied together.

Re: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Well I checked the plug and it seems to be ok. Tomorrow I am going to try to find a node tester to see if wire is working them I will go from there. Thank you all for your help. I will let you know what I find out. Is there anything else I can or could be looking for? The injector still seems to be staying open not ticking anymore. (maybe it never was)
Thank you, Joe |

Re: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Ok I checked plug with light and it stayed on solid bright light, so I checked another and it was a faint light that blinked. With that does this mean that it could be grounding out or ECU? What do you think I should check next?
Brain boxes are very expensive so I want to just make sure this is it before I purchuse one. Thank you for all your help, Joe |
