Problems(a must read)

ok well first off i bought this about 6 months ago and had nothing but problems since.

1st. started to overheat so added dexcool antifreeze and then about a week later started to overheat agian. Bought a new radatior(i know i cant spell) installed it and bam same problem. i am going though a gallon of anitfreeze every 2 weeks or so. Any suggestions?

2nd. we have the 3rd brake light above the hatch, well about 2 months ago we noticed that the brake lights went out. the 3rd brake light still works but the bottom 2 dont. the turn signals work and the running lights work but the brake lights dont. we checked the light bulbs and wiring and everything looks good. agian any suggestions?

3rd. the newest problem is i was driving to work the other night and the transmission slipped out of gear(auto) and went right back in. I thought it was because of the ice and snow outside. but it happened agian and was wondering if this could be a sign that the trannys going out?

thanks

Re: Problems(a must read)

well first we need to know what year blazer and the engine and milage but here are a few suggestions to check

1) is your antifreeze leaking out or just dissapearing? The blazers are notrious for intake manifolds leaking or a headgasket could cause this loss also. Id pressure test the coolant system and the do a compression test .

2) How did you check the wiring? It seems like it would have to be in the wiring somewhere for both of these to go out. i was thinkin maybe the switch but if the third one is lightuing up then it shouldnt be that. recheck your wiring

3)what were you doing when tranny slipped cause I have heard alot of things about the actautor valve in the tranny pan making it seem like its slipping but wed need to know more to really help and check your fluid it might just need a change

1 - coolant is either leaking or going out the tailpipe. If there is white smoke, it's going out the tailpipe. Could be a leaky water pump. You might not necessarily be able to see it coming out the weep hole. Or it could have a leaky line somewhere. Or it could be a stuck thermostat and the coolant is boiling away out the overflow. Or a head gasket is bad and it's going out the overflow and burning it. If your using that much coolant then fill and watch for leaks. if you don't see any then it must be internal. With that much coolant use, I'd bet it's going external somehwere. OR the vehicle is overheating because of a bad fan switch or something to that affect and the coolant is boiling out. Make sure the fan/s are working.

2 - If the wiring is good and the brake switch is good, must be if 3rd light is working, then it has to be bad bulbs.

3 - Are you sure it went in and out? Could it have slipped on the ice? If it did slip in the tranny then maybe you are due for a tranny service, oil and filter change. It's a pretty common thing to do regularly. I'd start there.

Re: Problems(a must read)

(This is his wife) 1996 Chevy 4 dr I believe the engine is a 4.3

I think some of the problem with the antifreeze is that we installed the radiator ourselves. Not saying that we can't do we just did it in the dark and I am thinking that it possibly didn't get tightened enough. This is only a possiblility. But when the car is parked I don't see any leaking out. I have checked the oil and there isn't any antifreeze in the oil. It could just be burning off will check.

The milage on the car is 135000 the person we bought it from said he replaced the engine at 65000

We personally didn't check the wiring. A guy at Mineke or something like that checked it and the bulbs which were still fine and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. They were working when we bought the vehicle.

The weird thing about the tranny slipping is that it only does it on hill big or small and only when we have the cruise on. I am not sure why that is. It wasn't icy the day that we went and tested this it went from 2rpms about the normal to 5rpms. We will go check everything that you guys suggested.

Our fuel pump went out on Saturday so we have to fix that as well now. I know that one is going to suck since it is in the gas tank.

Thanks for all your help
