Hello All,
I'm new to the forum. I just purchased a 1996 OLds 88LS. It has 90k on the engine. It was pinging under the slightest load. I replaced plugs, wires, pcv, and cleaned the egr valve. The service engine light was on. It had a 0442 amd 1870 code. I found a vacuum line that was unplugged, fixed it. I took the ground off the battery while I was working on it. Now no engine light, but it still pings. It is not over heating. Help, any ideas? Thanks, Ken G |

Re: 1996 Olds 88 3.8l Pinging
Welcome to AF. Tough to tell from our desks what this noise may or may not be, assuming it is engine " ping", this is caused for the most part by an inop egr system, either the valve does not work or the exhaust passages to it are blocked.

Usually you would get a code but it may take some time to set. Scan it for pending codes.
