Angry 1996 Olds 88 3.8l Pinging

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum. I just purchased a 1996 OLds 88LS. It has 90k on the engine. It was pinging under the slightest load. I replaced plugs, wires, pcv, and cleaned the egr valve. The service engine light was on. It had a 0442 amd 1870 code. I found a vacuum line that was unplugged, fixed it. I took the ground off the battery while I was working on it. Now no engine light, but it still pings. It is not over heating.

Help, any ideas?

Thanks,
Ken G

Welcome to AF. Tough to tell from our desks what this noise may or may not be, assuming it is engine " ping", this is caused for the most part by an inop egr system, either the valve does not work or the exhaust passages to it are blocked.

It is an engine ping. Could the egr system be inop and and the computer not produce a trouble code?

Usually you would get a code but it may take some time to set. Scan it for pending codes.
