Fiesta Mk3 Kangaroo/ Non-starter

Hello

I have a '95 1.3i Automatic Mk3 (HCS engine, CVT gearbox)

Intermittant problems with starting - turns over but doesn't fire. This is coupled with kangarooing whilst at low revs (even at speed) and stalling when coming to a halt. Recently changed spark plugs to no avail. Gearbox has been suggested as the problem as it seems to struggle to select a low enough gear when slowing and stopping. How would this affect starting though?

Have I got 2 separate problems or are they both part of the same cause?
