New build 2006 BMW Sauber F1 starting

Hi there everyone. I'm a long time reader and observer of this form. It's a great place to get ideas and see the really nice work displayed here.

I decided to take a stab at putting something out here. Like most of you, I'm sure, you've been building kits for years now and just love it. It's something I've done since I was a kid and I still enjoy it at 50. I've never posted to a form before so bare with me. I'll post progress pictures.

This BMW kit is a curbside kit so it's just going to be some nice painting and decal work. We'll see just how it turns out. I'll keep you posted.

Enjoy.

Hi Greg, welcome to the forum! I think you'll find that participating here is much more rewarding than simply reading.

When you're sharing pics, it's strongly preferred if you place the actual image in your post instead of a link, like this.

Having to click links to open pics is annoying and time consuming, and as a result many people will simply choose not to look at your work. Using the actual image makes it much easier to read your thread and see your build.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks for any suggestion you have.
I found it easy by getting a photobucket account(http://register.photobucket.com/) or some similar kind of site also like Fotki etc.and its free to join then add your pictures to the site, copy the (IMG) code and paste it into you post, pretty easy when you get a grasp of it.

Re: New build 2006 BMW Sauber F1 starting

Hello to anyone who may be looking at this build. My name is Greg and this is the first time I have taken photos of a model I was going to build. I was inspired by what I have looked at out here on the Automotive Forms web site.

Like I had mentioned in the start of this thread, I've been building kits for years like many of you, and I have to tell you, this BMW kit has some serious molding issues like large gaps and part mismatch flaws. I'll stop complaining now and just get to it.

The first thing I did was to start filling in the wishbone struts for the front and rear suspension. For the mold dimples, I like to use the Mr. Surfacer 500. It does a great job.

I also had to fill the tie rods.

Now I glued the rear verticle splitters. The attachment method leaves a lot to be desired. It's really bad. Fill and sand.... fill and sand ....

YUCK !!

Since were taking a look at the seams, lets have a look at the front intake pods and the vertical ventilation wing.

Here are the side pods.

Another angle

Now take a close look at the area surrounding the vertical pod heat vents. This will take a few applications of putts and liquid filler.

This is the area without the vent.

Here is the chassis with the vents installed.

The other side.

This is the air intake.

Okay, now to the putty and filler. First thing I did was to fill in the areas on the diffuser. I then sanded off the white putty and applied some surfacer. This stuff flows nicely into nooks and crannies.

Here is the first fill on the tail.

And here is the second fill after sanding off the white putty.

Sand the surfacer off and lets see what we get.

Now a squirt of gray to have a look at the results.

I noticed a few areas that needed more sanding so....... that what I did.

The other side or course.

Here are the front pod filled

This side shows the first sanding and filling with surfacer.

Here are some shots of the side pod areas after sanding. I dont think I have had to do so much filling and sanding before on any of the other brands of kits I like to build.

Another application of primer and some more sanding.

There is a LOT more filling ahead of me on this build. I thought I would show you all a few shots of how bad some of these gaps are.

I'm going to have to completely reverse how I build this kit. I'm going to get the drivers seat done and installed next. Then, I'll have to install the front upper wishbone struts. Close up the bottom of the nose and forward chassis.

You'll notice in these shots the massive gap on the sides of the nose where the suspensions gets installed. I'll have to get those filled before I can paint.

I won't be able to install the suspension after I fill and sane this, so I'll have to do it first and take care not to damage the struts.

Also notice the area where the bottom portion of the cockpit ties into the side pods. There is a big gap there as well. I have to get that all cleaned up before I marry the upper chassis to the ground effects plate/ diffuser.

That's why the seat has to go in first. Once that bottom part is installed, there is no way to get the seat into the kit. All this filling and sanding in order to get this kit looking presentable when it is finally painted is a real effort. I'll just have to do a good job of masking of the cockpit when I get ready to paint.

Okay, I'm done for now. Next step is the seat

I would be curious for input from anyone whom may be looking at this. I'm wondering about what issues others have had with this kit. I think it will turn out fine and it'll be fun bringing it to you all. All inputs are welcome....... good or bad.

Thanks for look at this and there will be more to come.

Greg

Re: New build 2006 BMW Sauber F1 starting

Hello again to anyone who might be looking at this thread.

It's time to start filling and sanding this BMW Sauber F1 kit. I'll have to be honest here. This is the first Revell 1/24th kit I have built in years. I used to build Revell kits as a kid but that was a long time ago. I'm not impressed with the fit of the parts. I guess I didn't notice or care about these kinds of things as a kid, but I sure do now.

I would be interested to know how others who may have built this kit feel. Okay, on with the build. I'm going to going over the seams and gaps and filling of various areas. Lets start with the seams on the front pods and the rear diffuser section.

Here is the front pod sections showing the really bad seams and mold lines.

Another angle

The other side.

Heres a view of the side pods befor attaching the vertical heat exhaust vent.

Here the vent is glued in place.

Note the gap around the vertical heat vent on the side pods.

Another view

Here is the air intake.

Now if you thought that was bad, have a look at the rear diffuser section. the attachment configuration here is REALLY bad. Ton-O-Filling and Sanding ahead of me here.

Here is the othere side.

Okay, more shots to follow real soon that have the filling and sanding results. As I type this, I have the work finished already and the pictures taken. As soon as I complete the upload, I'll add some more info.

Believe me, this was a real putty / surfacer projects.

If anyone has some input on this thread, I would welcome it, either good or bad. Let me know what you think of this kit if you have built it before and share with me your suggestions and ideas.

To be continued.
Greg
